Syracuse Community Connections is a not-for-profit community-based leader in providing services to traditionally under-represented Syracuse neighborhoods, has an opening for a part-time and full-time Youth Prevention Specialist.
Under the supervision of the Manager of Community Services, the youth specialist works with a group of students (unisex) ages 5-17 years old in after school, school breaks and summer programs. The program is based on the 8 essential features of positive youth development programs (Physical and Psychological Safety, Appropriate Structure, Supportive Relationships, Opportunities to Belong, Positive Social Norms, Support for Efficacy and Mattering, Opportunities for Skill Building and Integration of Family, School and Community Efforts). The Youth Specialist assists implementing and activities in 4 core areas: Academic Enrichment, Career Development, Cultural Enrichment and Personal Development & Wellness. Wellness encompasses alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse prevention amongst other traditional wellness focuses. Hours of operation Monday- Friday, occasional Saturdays, and summer camp July and August 9am-530pm.
Essential Job Functions- Assist with programming related to adolescent substance abuse prevention.
- Conduct team activities conducive to participants needs.
- Conduct prevention education presentations onsite and in the Community (Syracuse City School District).
- Assist with collecting cultural, age-appropriate education and outreach materials.
- Supervise a group of students in an instructional setting, maintaining high standards for behavior and safety.
- Provide homework assistance; academic and cultural enrichment; career, personal development, and wellness activities.
- Assist in delivering program activities through discussions, hands-on activities, arts-based activities, community projects, guest speakers, field trips and recreational activities.
- Support individual students in various settings encouraging full participation in activities and relationship building among students, staff, and volunteers.
- Monitor student behavior reinforces positive behavior and enforces behavior expectations.
- Serve as a positive role model for students in the program through appropriate dress, speech, attitude, and time management.
- Identify student and program needs and communicate those to teachers, staff, and volunteers as appropriate. Enter weekly notes on individual students and meet weekly with school staff and other service providers.
- Abide by a strict code of confidentiality in all matters related to the position.
- Attend meetings, workshops and training seminars as required.
- Monitor all interactions between volunteers and students.
- Assist with clerical work including maintaining accurate sign-in/sign-out sheets for students and volunteers, snack sheets, individual student reflections and activity attendance sheets.
- Assist in set up for activities and keeping activity sites sanitized, clean and safe for all.
Education Requirements
- High School Diploma or completion of GED is required
Previous Experience Requirement
- A minimum of 1 year of experience working in school based and community-based programs with middle or high school students and their families; prior experience with diverse ethnic, gender, age, and cultural groups desired. Knowledge of substance abuse and addiction curriculum development helpful.
