Accounting Manager

About the Role:

As Accounting Manager, you will oversee the full accounting function, ensuring accurate, timely month-end close and robust financial reporting for the organization. You will lead and refine processes across payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial statement preparation, providing clear financial insight to support strategic decision-making. Working closely with executive leadership, you will be a key contributor to financial stability, compliance, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee and manage the complete month-end close process, including reconciliations and review of all balance sheet and income statement accounts.
• Direct and supervise payroll, accounts payable, and accounts receivable activities to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to internal controls.
• Prepare, review, and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with nonprofit accounting standards.
• Maintain and enhance accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to support compliance and operational effectiveness.
• Partner with leadership to provide financial analysis, variance explanations, and recommendations to support budgeting and strategic planning.
• Coordinate with external auditors and stakeholders, ensuring accurate documentation and smooth audit and review processes.
• Lead, mentor, and develop accounting staff, promoting a collaborative, service-oriented approach to supporting the organisation.
• Identify and implement process improvements and system enhancements to increase efficiency and data integrity.

Key Requirements:

• Significant accounting experience within a nonprofit organization, with a strong understanding of nonprofit financial structures and reporting.
• Proven track record managing month-end close processes, including payroll, AP, AR, and financial statement preparation.
• Demonstrated ability to lead an accounting function and oversee day-to-day operations in a multi-faceted environment.
• Strong technical proficiency with accounting systems and Excel, including reconciliations and financial analysis.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional, approachable personality, with the ability to build trust across departments.
• High level of accuracy, attention to detail, and ownership of deadlines and deliverables.
• Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.

Desirable Skills:

• Experience with grant accounting, fund accounting, or restricted/unrestricted fund tracking.
• Background working with nonprofit-focused accounting software or ERP systems.
• Prior involvement in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
• Experience improving or implementing accounting processes, workflows, or systems.
• Supervisory experience leading and developing accounting or finance staff.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field.
• CPA or equivalent professional certification preferred.
• Advanced coursework or certification in nonprofit accounting or financial management considered an asset.
