The Truckload Transportation Planner is responsible for planning, scheduling, and optimizing truckload transportation activity in support of manufacturing and distribution operations. The planner acts as a critical link between production, shipping, carriers, and yard operations to execute daily transportation plans aligned with business priorities.
Key Responsibilities
Transportation Planning & Scheduling
- Develop and execute daily and weekly truckload transportation plans to support outbound and inbound material flows.
- Schedule live load, drop‑and‑hook, and pool point shipments to maximize asset utilization and minimize detention, dwell, and re‑handling.
- Sequence shipments based on production release timing, customer delivery requirements, and carrier availability.
- Proactively adjust schedules in response to production changes, weather, carrier constraints, or yard congestion.
- Manage live load scheduling windows to balance dock capacity, labor availability, and carrier turn times.
- Optimize pool distribution strategies, including load consolidation, relay points, and carrier assignment.
- Monitor pool inventory positions and replenishment timing to ensure service continuity and cost effectiveness.
- Analyze live vs. pool load tradeoffs to improve transportation efficiency and total delivered cost.
- Communicate shipment requirements, schedules, and changes clearly with internal teams, carriers, and yard operations.
- Ensure proper equipment positioning and cycle times for trailers and tractors.
- Identify and resolve service failures, delays, or accessorial risks in real time.
- Support carrier performance management through adherence to routing guides and contractual terms.
- Utilize Transportation Management Systems (TMS), appointment scheduling tools, and yard management systems to plan and execute loads.
- Proactively diagnose gaps in PPR Vehicle scheduling system, communicate these gaps to team responsible for future TIPS MES system.
- Track and analyze key transportation metrics such as on‑time pickup/delivery, detention, dwell time, equipment utilization, and cost per load.
- Identify opportunities to improve scheduling logic, delivery patterns, or pool strategies.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and standard work development related to transportation planning.
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Operations, or related field or equivalent transportation planning experience.
- 2–5 years of experience in truckload transportation planning, logistics, or manufacturing distribution preferred.
- Strong understanding of live load operations, pool distribution models, and carrier scheduling.
- Proficiency with TMS platforms, spreadsheets, and scheduling tools.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven manufacturing environment.
- Strong problem‑solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong Interpersonal Skills and Emotional Intelligence
- Experience supporting industrial or heavy manufacturing operations.
- Familiarity with yard management and dock scheduling systems.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations and common truckload accessorial.
- Lean or continuous improvement exposure (Kaizen, standard work, root cause analysis)
- Strong data analysis and analytical skills
