What are the responsibilities and job description for the Telecommunications Installer position at Swoon?
We’re hiring Telecommunications Installers at two levels (Installer I and Installer II) to support installation, maintenance, and servicing of telecom equipment in the field.
Level difference (at-a-glance):
- Installer I (Entry-Level): Focuses on basic tasks and non-complex equipment under close supervision of a Lead Installer; escalates complex issues.
- Installer II (Mid-Level): Handles a broader scope including testing/troubleshooting fiber/copper, interpreting drawings/specs, and may train junior installers; still works under supervision for more complex work.
What You’ll Do (Both levels)
- Perform cable installation, termination, labeling, and lacing to industry standards
- Mount racks, frames, shelves and ensure secure, correct installation
- Read and stay current on installation documentation
- Add/remove non-powered equipment/hardware
- Inventory job-related materials
Additional Responsibilities — Installer II
- Test and troubleshoot fiber/copper installations
- Perform verification/continuity testing
- Interpret drawings, plans, and specifications
- Interpret job plan/scope; support retrofits and upgrades
- Discuss media selection and implementation implications
- Make recommendations based on codes, standards, and best practices
- May provide training to less experienced installers (as needed)
Travel / Shift Requirements (Both Levels)
- Must be available to travel 50%–75%
- Travel may include overnight stays 1–2 weeks at a time, including weekends
- Early morning shifts; occasional evening shifts; infrequent weekend work
- Reliable transportation required; able to transport minor tools to work locations
Physical Requirements (Both Levels)
- Lift 50 lbs minimum; up to 100 lbs occasionally
- Work on ladders and in confined spaces
- Work safely around electrical wires and ESD products
- Fine motor skills/manual dexterity for tools and small components
- Ability to stoop, kneel, bend, squat, crawl, push, pull
Skills & Qualifications
Required (Both Levels)
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Complete “Basic Installation” training or equivalent On the Job Training
- Completion of Safety, Business Code of Conduct, QA, and ESD training
- Familiarity with standards: AT&T TP-76300 / 76409, Telcordia GR1275, Verizon IP72202
- Basic network product knowledge (Installer II: moderate knowledge expected)
- Proficiency with computers/tablets and MS Office
- Strong attention to detail, communication, and troubleshooting
- Valid driver’s license, acceptable driving record, and proof of insurance
Experience
- Installer I: Entry-level; proficiency in relevant Network Elements (1–4) with management assessment/approval of Level I skill level
- Installer II: Minimum 3 years field service (or equivalent combination), OR progression via Installer Academy; management assessment/approval of Level II skills; proficiency in relevant Network Elements (1–4)
Preferred (Both Levels)
- 2 years electronics training from technical trade school or military
