Sussex County Community College is seeking a part time Military and Veteran Engagement Specialist. The Military and Veteran Engagement Specialist/ School Certifying Official (SCO) role carries significant responsibility in administering VA educational benefits and ensuring compliance with U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs regulations. These duties require a high level of accuracy, timeliness, and ongoing oversight, as errors or delays can directly impact students' financial stability and the institution's standing with the VA. In addition to federal compliance obligations, the position is responsible for advancing the College's priorities related to veteran recruitment, retention, program development, and cross-departmental coordination. Successfully supporting military-affiliated students requires consistent engagement, proactive programming, and collaboration across multiple offices, all of which demand sustained time and attention.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Serves as the School Certifying Official (SCO) for the College.
- Establishes a rapport and productive working relationship with military and veteran community partners.
- Represents SCCC at area military and veteran events. Coordinates activities with all available College resources, including financial aid, faculty members and other appropriate parties.
- Identifies and implements strategies to recruit and retain student Veterans.
- Assists with leadership and oversight for the Veterans' Resource Center.
- Provides academic advising for all veteran students and monitors student academic progress. Provides referrals to other services as needed.
- Attends state and regional meetings, trainings and conferences to remain current on policies, procedures and regulations specific to VA educational benefits and programs.
- Helps to organize and seek input from a Veterans advisory group composed of internal and external members.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
