What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laboratory Director position at Susan B Allen Memorial Hospital?
1. Plans the operation of the department by establishing budget, goals, and objectives, deciding on means to achieve goals, and formulating action plans.
2. Organizes the department by scheduling work assignments, establishing time frames, providing needed equipment and supplies, assigning authority and responsibility, and coordinating department activities.
3. Staffs the department by hiring qualified individuals, providing work place orientation, and initiating termination procedures as appropriate.
4. Influences organizational members by motivating employees, demonstrating leadership, promoting communication, and by supporting a team philosophy.
5. Controls operation of department by establishing performance goals or standards, evaluating actual performance, managing budget compliance, assuring adherence to organizational policy and procedures, initiating disciplinary actions, and by meeting regulatory and/or accreditation standards.
6. Reports to appropriate entity expense and revenue budget variations, statistical measures, Quality/Risk Management activities, and unusual occurrences.
7. Implements programs, policy and procedures, and educational endeavors to assure quality operation of the department.
8. Develops the department and employees by providing needs assessment and education.
9. Performs the essential functions of Medical Technologist as needed.
10. Acts as Technical Consultant for any outside clinics or Physician's Offices affiliated with Susan B. Allen Memorial Hospital.
11. Acts as Technical Consultant to build and maintain Laboratory on a Reference Level.
12. Develops and supports community and physician relationships.
13. Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proven leadership ability with management expertise.
Education:
Must have a Bachelor’s degree / Master's degree perferred, and have completed an accredited Medical Technology program. Must be an MT (ASCP) or equivalent.
Experience: Must have minimum of 10 years laboratory experience with 2 years supervisory experience.
Certification/Licensure: Registered Medical Technologist, ASCP or equivalent.
B.C.L.S. (Basic Cardiac Life Support): Maintain certification, renew every two years.
Due to the function of the laboratory, it is necessary to staff on a 24 hour a day basis seven days a week, including holidays. Personnel working in the laboratory must be available to work various shifts to accomplish this. Laboratory personnel are required to wear appropriate protective attire as dictated by procedure and safety requirements.
Requires occasional sitting. Frequent walking and standing are required. Occasionally required to lift up to 35 lbs and carry up to 25 lbs. Eye-hand, manual, and finger dexterity are required. Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range. Requires working irregular hours and under stressful conditions. Some exposure to communicable diseases, sharps, hazardous materials, and body fluids is required. Occasional bending, twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and grasping are required. Overhead work is occasionally required. Occasional pushing and pulling of objects up to 75 lbs. Requires the ability to distinguish letters or symbols. Use of office equipment such as computer terminals, telephones, or copiers is required.
