Equipment Technician - Electronics Manufacturing

Openings: 2 – one 2nd shift and one 3rd shift
Pay: Starting at $25.55 per hour, with higher starting compensation based on directly relevant electronics-manufacturing equipment experience and demonstrated capability

About the Position

Surface Mount Technology Corporation is looking for experienced Equipment Technicians to support the automated manufacturing equipment used in our electronics manufacturing operation.

The primary need is for technicians who already have hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting and supporting equipment in an electronics manufacturing, EMS, PCB/PCBA or closely related automated electronics-production environment.

This is a hands-on technical role focused on keeping production equipment operating reliably, supporting operators, troubleshooting equipment problems, completing preventative maintenance and helping introduce new products and equipment into production.

We are primarily recruiting experienced technicians who can contribute at an advanced or intermediate level. SMT may also consider an exceptional developmental candidate with strong electromechanical aptitude and meaningful automated-equipment maintenance experience who is capable of learning electronics-manufacturing equipment and processes.

What You Will Do

Depending on experience and demonstrated capability, responsibilities may include:

• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, electronic and pneumatic equipment problems.
• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on automated production equipment.
• Respond to unscheduled equipment failures and help restore equipment to production.
• Support machine utilization, reliability and downtime-improvement efforts.
• Assist production operators with technical equipment issues.
• Make appropriate equipment and program adjustments.
• Use technical manuals, service documentation, diagnostic tools and measurement equipment to troubleshoot problems.
• Support installation and implementation of new manufacturing equipment and technology.
• Support new-product and assembly transitions as they relate to production equipment and tooling.
• Maintain and help manage equipment spare parts.
• Identify equipment conditions that may affect product quality or manufacturing performance.
• Train operators on appropriate equipment operation, maintenance and basic troubleshooting.
• Work with equipment manufacturers and technical-service providers when additional support is required.
• Follow applicable safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout requirements.
• Document maintenance activity and support continuous improvement of equipment reliability and performance.

Equipment at SMT includes automated electronics-manufacturing systems such as surface-mount placement, printing, reflow, AOI, X-ray, wave/selective solder and other automated production equipment.

Experienced Equipment Technician

Strong A/B-level candidates should bring:

• Hands-on equipment technician experience within EMS, PCB/PCBA manufacturing, electronics manufacturing or a closely related electronics-production environment.
• Experience troubleshooting and maintaining automated manufacturing equipment.
• Strong electromechanical troubleshooting ability.
• Experience with mechanical, pneumatic and electronic systems.
• Ability to read and use technical manuals, service documentation and troubleshooting information.
• Experience supporting production equipment reliability, preventative maintenance and equipment repairs.
• Ability to work independently on technical equipment problems.
• Strong computer and technical-system skills.

Experience with equipment from manufacturers such as Universal Instruments, Mydata/Mycronic, DEK, Vitronics or similar electronics-manufacturing equipment is especially relevant.

For experienced A/B-level placement, SMT preferers an applicable two-year technical degree in electro-mechanical, electrical/electronic technology or a closely related technical field, along with directly relevant experience and demonstrated capability.

Developmental Equipment Technician Candidate

SMT will also consider a smaller number of candidates who do not yet have direct electronics-manufacturing experience if they demonstrate unusually strong technical potential.

A developmental candidate should have meaningful experience such as:

• electromechanical equipment maintenance;
• automation equipment;
• industrial machine troubleshooting and repair;
• electrical/mechanical maintenance;
• machine programming or controls;
• automated manufacturing equipment;
• CAD or other relevant technical systems.

These candidates must demonstrate strong mechanical/electromechanical aptitude, troubleshooting ability and the ability to learn complex automated equipment.

A candidate without electronics-manufacturing experience would be entering SMT on a developmental path and would need to learn our equipment, processes and electronics-manufacturing requirements before progressing to the experienced technician classifications.

Pay: $25.55 - $35.55 per hour
