Superior Skilled Trades is seeking Traveling Substation Technicians for immediate hire on long-term, nationwide projects. This is a great opportunity to work on critical infrastructure with consistent hours, overtime potential, and travel per diem.
Position Details
- PAY: Starting at $30 - 80 (strictly depending on experience)
- HOURS: 8-hour days starting at 7:00 AM
- SCHEDULE: Monday–Friday; 40 hours/week (OT available)
- START DATE: Immediate
- DURATION: Temp-to-hire (long-term opportunity)
- TRAVEL: 80–90% travel (typically 2 weeks on / 1 week home)
- PER DIEM: Provided daily while traveling (rate varies by project)
Job Description
The Traveling Substation Technician will support testing, commissioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of substation equipment ranging from low voltage to transmission-level systems. This role requires strong technical knowledge, safety compliance, and the ability to work in high-voltage environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform testing and commissioning of:
- Power transformers
- LV/MV/HV circuit breakers
- CTs & PTs
- Protective relays
- Switchgear and control systems
- Conduct electrical testing including:
- Insulation resistance (Megger)
- Turns ratio (TTR)
- Power factor / Doble testing
- Primary & secondary injection
- Interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Troubleshoot protection and control systems
- Execute switching procedures (when authorized)
- Generate and review test reports and commissioning documentation
- Follow OSHA and NFPA 70E safety standards at all times
Qualifications
- 3 years of substation or electrical field experience
- Strong understanding of high-voltage systems and protection/control schemes
- Hands-on experience with relay testing equipment (Omicron, Megger, Doble, etc.)
- Ability to read and interpret prints and schematics
- Valid driver’s license
- Willingness to travel extensively (80–90%)
Preferred Qualifications
- NETA or NICET Certification (Level II or higher)
- Experience in data centers or utility-scale substations
- OSHA 10/30 Certification
- Arc Flash / NFPA 70E training
- Switching experience (utility or industrial)
Requirements
- Must be eligible to work in the United States
- Must have reliable transportation
- Must be able to safely use hand/power tools and PPE
- Must be able to perform physical work including standing, bending, working at heights, and lifting up to 50 lbs
- Pre-employment drug test and background check
