About Us

Join our team at Sunstone Veterinary Specialists! We're an independent, privately owned emergency and specialty veterinary hospital in Portland, Oregon, dedicated to providing exceptional care for our patients and their families.

We believe great veterinary care starts with a great team. Our staff members are skilled, compassionate, and supportive of one another. We value teamwork, open communication, and opportunities to continue learning and growing throughout your career.

About the Position

We're looking for an experienced Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) to join our Emergency team!

This is a hands-on position where you'll work closely with our emergency veterinarians, technicians, and assistants to provide high-quality care to emergency and hospitalized patients.

Our ER technicians play an essential role in patient care, from triaging incoming emergencies and assisting with critical procedures to providing skilled nursing care and monitoring hospitalized patients.

Emergency medicine can be fast-paced and unpredictable, so we're looking for someone who is confident in their technical skills, communicates effectively, stays calm under pressure, and enjoys working as part of a collaborative medical team.

Schedule: Full-time, three 12-hour day shifts per week, including weekend coverage.

What You'll Do

  • Provide skilled nursing care to emergency and hospitalized patients, including administering medications, fluids, oxygen therapy, infusions, and blood products.
  • Assess and triage incoming emergency patients, recognizing critical needs and communicating findings to the attending veterinarian.
  • Monitor hospitalized patients, recognize changes in their condition, and respond appropriately to patient needs.
  • Assist with emergency and critical care procedures, including stabilization, CPR, wound care, and surgery.
  • Perform and monitor anesthesia, including induction, maintenance, and recovery.
  • Perform diagnostic testing, laboratory procedures, and diagnostic imaging.
  • Communicate compassionately with clients, provide patient updates, and review discharge instructions and home care recommendations.
  • Work collaboratively with veterinarians, technicians, and assistants to ensure patients receive attentive, timely care.
  • Help maintain a clean, organized, and well-equipped treatment environment.

What We're Looking For

Our ideal candidate is a skilled, compassionate technician who enjoys the variety and challenges of emergency medicine and takes pride in providing excellent patient care.

We're especially interested in candidates who have:

  • Current veterinary technician certification in Oregon, or eligibility to obtain certification.
  • Previous veterinary technician experience, ideally with two or more years in emergency medicine.
  • Strong technical and nursing skills, including anesthesia, patient monitoring, and emergency procedures.
  • The ability to think critically, prioritize patient needs, and adapt to changing situations.
  • Excellent communication skills and a compassionate approach to working with clients during stressful situations.
  • A collaborative mindset and willingness to support teammates, share knowledge, and continue learning.

Compensation & Benefits

We offer competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package that includes:

  • Medical and dental insurance
  • Paid vacation
  • Generous SIMPLE IRA employer match
  • Continuing education (CE) allowance
  • Employee pet care discounts
  • Financial wellness program
