Multisystemic Therapist (MST)

Position Summary

The Multisystemic Therapist (MST) provides intensive, home- and community-based therapy to youth experiencing serious behavioral, emotional, and/or substance use challenges who are at risk of out-of-home placement.

The MST Therapist works collaboratively with families, schools, probation officers, child welfare agencies, and other community systems to reduce problem behaviors and strengthen family functioning. Services are delivered using the evidence-based Multisystemic Therapy (MST) model, with a strong emphasis on accountability, measurable outcomes, and adherence to MST fidelity standards.


Key Responsibilities

Clinical Services

  • Deliver intensive, evidence-based MST interventions to youth and families in home, school, and community settings.

  • Conduct comprehensive assessments addressing family, peer, school, and community systems.

  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans aligned with MST principles and program guidelines.

  • Maintain a small caseload (typically 4–6 families) to ensure intensive and responsive services.

  • Provide crisis intervention and on-call support to families in accordance with MST program standards.


Collaboration & Systems Coordination

  • Partner closely with caregivers to build family strengths, improve parenting skills, and support sustainable change.

  • Collaborate with schools, juvenile justice systems, probation officers, court services, and child protective services (CPS) involved in the youth’s care.

  • Advocate for youth and families while maintaining professional boundaries and ethical standards.

  • Coordinate with community resources to support long-term stability and positive outcomes.


Documentation & Compliance

  • Complete timely, accurate, and compliant clinical documentation in accordance with agency policies, MST standards, and regulatory requirements.

  • Participate in weekly individual supervision, group supervision, and MST consultation meetings.

  • Track treatment outcomes and ensure fidelity to the MST model, including participation in quality assurance activities.


Professional Development

  • Complete all required MST training and ongoing professional development activities.

  • Stay current with evidence-based practices, trauma-informed care, and culturally responsive services.

  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or a related human services field.

  • Experience working with at-risk youth and families preferred.

  • Strong crisis intervention and engagement skills.

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.

  • Ability to pass background checks and meet agency hiring requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Multisystemic Therapy (MST) or other evidence-based family therapy models.

  • Experience working with justice-involved youth, juvenile detention, truancy programs, probation services, court services, or child welfare systems.

  • Experience in case management and community-based behavioral health services.

  • Community-based role requiring frequent in-home visits and work within family environments.

  • Flexible scheduling required to meet family needs, including evenings and occasional weekends.

  • Shared on-call responsibilities among MST team members according to program guidelines.
