Position Summary
Our client is seeking an experienced Paint Team Manager to lead all paint operations within a manufacturing environment. This position is responsible for ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, productivity, and employee development while overseeing paint booth operations, surface preparation, paint application, color matching, paint mixing, coating performance, and final finish quality.
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in commercial vehicle, truck, heavy equipment, fleet, or industrial painting and possess strong technical knowledge of coating systems, paint chemistry, color formulation, and the preparation of aluminum and steel substrates. This leader will work closely with Production, Quality, Engineering, and Safety teams to ensure products consistently meet customer and manufacturing quality standards.
Key Responsibilities, Leadership, and Team Management
- Lead, supervise, and develop painters, paint prep technicians, and paint booth operators.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and performance management to support employee growth.
- Establish daily production priorities and staffing plans to meet production schedules.
- Foster a culture focused on safety, quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support employee development initiatives.
Paint Operations
- Manage all paint booth operations from surface preparation through final inspection.
- Serve as the technical expert for paint systems, coating processes, and finishing techniques.
- Oversee paint mixing, color matching, viscosity control, and material usage to ensure consistent quality while minimizing waste.
- Troubleshoot coating defects including:
- Adhesion failures
- Orange peel
- Fisheyes
- Runs and sags
- Blistering
- Contamination
- Curing issues
- Ensure all coating processes comply with manufacturer specifications and engineering requirements.
Surface Preparation
- Oversee preparation of aluminum and steel components before painting.
- Ensure proper cleaning, sanding, grinding, masking, pretreatment, and primer application.
- Verify substrates meet requirements for coating adhesion, corrosion resistance, durability, and appearance.
- Develop and maintain standardized work instructions for preparation and paint processes.
Quality Assurance
- Ensure finished products meet quality standards and customer specifications.
- Inspect finished products for:
- Color consistency
- Gloss
- Film thickness
- Coverage
- Surface finish
- Overall appearance
- Monitor paint process performance and implement corrective actions when quality concerns arise.
- Partner with Engineering and Quality teams to perform root cause analysis and prevent recurring defects.
- Maintain paint quality documentation and inspection records.
Production & Continuous Improvement
- Improve paint department productivity and operational efficiency.
- Monitor labor utilization, throughput, and material consumption.
- Reduce scrap, rework, and paint waste through process improvements.
- Participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support production scheduling to ensure on-time customer delivery.
Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and company safety requirements.
- Enforce proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Oversee safe handling, storage, and disposal of paints, solvents, and hazardous materials.
- Conduct routine safety observations and department audits.
- Maintain compliance with environmental regulations and permit requirements.
Qualifications Required
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial truck, heavy equipment, fleet, automotive, or industrial painting.
- Minimum 3 years of supervisory or management experience in a manufacturing paint department.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Industrial coating systems

- Experience preparing and painting aluminum and steel substrates.
- Working knowledge of:

- OSHA training or certification.
