Position Summary 

The South Zone of the Shoshone National Forest is looking for two candidates to serve as developed recreation/ OHV rangers for the 2026 summer season. One position will be located on the Wind River Ranger District based out of Dubois, WY and the other will be located on the Washakie Ranger District based out of Lander, WY. As a hybrid position, appointees will gain full knowledge of the ins and outs of the developed recreation program on the Forest.

 

Developed recreation duties will include daily interactions with the public to provide information regarding the Forest, cleaning and maintenance of developed and dispersed recreation sites (campgrounds, day use areas, boat ramps, trailheads), hazard tree monitoring and removal, interactions with a large number of volunteer campground hosts and working with a variety of volunteer and conservation groups to complete special projects on the Districts, amongst other things.

 

OHV ranger duties include patrolling District roads and trails via UTV, ATV or 4x4 truck to provide information to the public, help enforce Forest rules and regulations and minor trail maintenance to include removal of downed trees and fixing of damaged road and trail sections. It is expected that the work accomplished by appointees will become an integral part of the overall success of a very busy recreation program here on the South Zone of the Shoshone National Forest!

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Marginal Duties 

Members may work on an ad-hoc basis helping other disciplines within each District, which may include hydrology, wildlife, engineering, fisheries, timber, silviculture or fire.

 

Required Qualifications 

Members must be able to communicate effectively with members of the recreating public. A personal vehicle and current driver's license is required to travel to and from the duty location and to get around during time off (a government vehicle is provided for use while conducting day to day activities). Looking for recent college graduates or individuals available for a 17-18 week program of work.

 

This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Prior experience using an ATV, UTV and 4x4 vehicle use is preferred, but not required

Prior experience using a chainsaw is preferred, but not required

Prior experience using various hand and power tools is preferred, but not required

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Wind River Ranger District- Dubois, WY: Shared bunkhouse facility located on Forest Service compound within the town limits of Dubois; Capacity of up to 10 people with shared, dorm room style bedrooms (5 rooms, 2 people per room); Shared restrooms, kitchen, laundry and common areas; Walking distance to most amenities in town (grocery store, gas stations, restaurants, library); Cell phone service within town limits; WiFi available at facility

 

Washakie Ranger District- Lander, WY: Shared double-wide trailer in very nice condition located at the Middle Fork Guard Station complex approximately 7 miles south of Lander; Accommodations of up to 5 people (2 shared bedrooms and 1 single); 2 restroom/shower rooms shared by occupants; Shared kitchen, laundry and common area; Travel to and from duty location (District Office) using personal vehicle required; Cell phone service is extremely limited; No WiFi currently available

 

Compensation  

$1,100 To/from Travel allowance (Paid once)

Living allowance- $450/week (Paid bi-weekly)

Housing provided by Forest Service (See Living Accommodations for details)

 

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
