Individual Placement - Native Trout Conservation Crew

Position Summary 

Successful applicants will perform as a crew member in field and lab activities to conserve native fish in Yellowstone National Park. Major program activities include 1) conserving native cutthroat trout in Yellowstone Lake by suppressing invasive lake trout using gill nets and trap nets; 2) conserving native fish in streams, rivers, and small lakes by suppressing nonnative trout using mechanical and chemical removal techniques, and augmenting native fish populations through conservation translocations as necessary; and 3) monitoring fish populations using various sampling techniques (e.g., gill netting, electrofishing, angling, visual surveys), measuring fish, and collecting biological and environmental information. Successful applicants will have opportunities to assist on various fisheries projects throughout their appointment.

 

Schedule 

May 18, 2026 - August 7, 2026

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Invasive species suppression; Gillnetting; Boating; Electrofishing; Hiking and backpacking; Wading in streams, lakes, and rivers; Stocking native fish and gametes; Measuring and collecting biological data from fish; Euthanizing nonnative fish; Assisting mechanical and chemical removals of nonnative fish; Ensuring accurate data collection and entry; Working with various collaborators including other crew members, contractors, researchers, and volunteers;

 

Marginal Duties 

Lifting heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs); Transporting gear long distances by foot; Working in remote locations occupied by grizzly bears; Repairing and maintaining sampling equipment; Tracking on boats using acoustic telemetry; Tagging fish; Recording field data; Measuring and collecting biological data from fish; Measuring and collecting water quality parameters; Assisting with large-scale chemical removal projects

 

Required Qualifications 

  • Current and valid U.S. driver’s license
  • Personal vehicle to travel to and from duty station
  • Some education towards a biology or environmental science-related related college degree;

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Field sampling; Working or recreating in remote areas; Working or recreating on streams, rivers, or lakes; Experience driving 4WD vehicles; Data collection and entry experience;

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Shared housing provided (private room with shared living quarters); Housing is located in remote areas up to a 2-hr drive from the nearest grocery store;

 

Compensation  

$1,100 To/From Travel Allowance (Paid once)

$350 Weekly Living Allowance (Paid bi weekly)

Housing provided on site

All-Weather Uniform Package (Arborwear)

 

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
