Position Summary 

As a Biological Science Technician, you will support the biological program at Erie NWR by conducting wildlife surveys, collecting and managing ecological data, and assisting in habitat restoration efforts. This position is well-suited for individuals with a strong interest in hands-on conservation, fieldwork, and applied ecology. Located in the glaciated landscape of northwestern Pennsylvania, Erie National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) encompasses more than 8,900 acres of rich wetland, forest, and grassland habitats. Established to provide resting, feeding, and nesting areas for waterfowl and other migratory birds, Erie NWR is a vital conservation area supporting a diverse array of native wildlife, including over 230 bird species. Key Duties and Responsibilities 

Conduct biological surveys for wildlife, including migratory birds, bats, amphibians, reptiles, freshwater mussels, and other native species. Monitor plant communities and habitat conditions through vegetation sampling, water quality monitoring, and data collection. Assist with implementation of habitat management strategies, including invasive species control, native seed collection, native vegetation planting. Operate field equipment including cameras, GPS equipment, tablets, and mobile data apps to collect biological and geospatial data; assist in mapping and GIS data management. Maintain detailed and accurate field notes, data records, and reporting logs in accordance with refuge protocols. Use established automated databases to enter, organize and perform preliminary analysis of collected data. Support biological monitoring linked to management objectives, such as tracking the effectiveness of wetland restoration efforts.

 

Marginal Duties 

Perform routine maintenance of field equipment and tools. Assist with the preparation of outreach materials or educational content related to refuge biological programs. Assist with the management of water levels in freshwater impoundments. Occasionally participate in public events or guided walks to support community engagement, outreach, and education. Provide support to staff in other refuge programs (e.g., visitor services, maintenance) as needed and as appropriate to workload and expertise. Assist in training volunteers on data collection methods and field safety procedures.

 

Required Qualifications 

One year of specialized experience in biological science work OR completion of relevant college-level coursework in biology, ecology, wildlife management, or a related field. Ability to navigate rugged terrain and variable environmental conditions while carrying field gear. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in data management. Valid driver’s license required.

 

 

 

Preferred Qualifications 

Knowledge of field survey techniques and wildlife monitoring protocols. Proficiency in using GPS; GIS or mapping software experience is a plus.

 

Hours 

40 per week

 

Living Accommodations 

Free on-site housing provided (shared accommodation with basic amenities).

 

Compensation  

$500/week living allowance;$250 travel allowance (one-time, for relocation or transportation costs);Opportunity to gain federal experience with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
