What are the responsibilities and job description for the General Manager / Head of Sales & Operations position at Stu's Home Improvement Outlet?
General Manager / Head of Sales & Operations
High-Ticket Retail | Sales Leadership | Right-Hand to Owner
Stu’s Home Improvement Outlet
We’re Looking for a Right-Hand Leader
Stu’s Home Improvement Outlet is searching for an exceptional General Manager / Head of Sales & Operations to work directly alongside the owner and take ownership of the day-to-day performance of the business.
This is not a traditional retail Store Manager position.
We need a builder, operator, sales leader, and strong closer who can walk into the business, take ownership, increase revenue, develop people, solve problems, and get things done.
The right person will become a true right hand to the owner.
Our goal is to find someone capable of running today's business while helping us build the company we're becoming.
YOUR #1 PRIORITY: REVENUE
This is a sales-driven organization.
You will be directly accountable for increasing store revenue and developing a sales organization capable of consistently producing results.
When sales are behind goal, we don't need someone to explain why.
We need someone who knows what to do about it.
You will:
- Lead from the sales floor
- Personally step into deals and help close customers
- Establish daily, weekly, and monthly sales expectations
- Coach salespeople in real time
- Improve closing percentages
- Increase average transaction value
- Train objection handling, negotiation, financing, upselling, and closing
- Ensure every customer is actively engaged
- Drive consistent follow-up with leads and unsold customers
- Hold salespeople accountable for individual production
- Identify underperformance quickly and address it
- Create energy, urgency, and accountability
- Build a culture where sales results matter
YOU MUST BE A CLOSER
We are looking for someone who can teach sales because you know how to sell yourself.
When a salesperson is struggling with a $3,000 appliance package, furniture purchase, or other major transaction, you should be comfortable stepping into the conversation and helping get the deal closed.
This is not a management position where you spend the majority of your day behind a desk.
You will be visible. You will be involved. You will lead from the floor.
BUILD THE SALES TEAM
One of your most important responsibilities will be recruiting and developing talent.
Experienced salespeople aren't always easy to find in our market.
That cannot become an excuse for poor sales performance.
We need someone who knows how to recognize raw sales ability and turn motivated, competitive, coachable people into productive sales professionals.
You will be responsible for:
- Recruiting continuously
- Interviewing and selecting sales talent
- Building a bench of candidates
- Developing structured sales training
- Training new hires quickly
- Conducting role-play and objection training
- Teaching financing and payment options
- Coaching closing techniques
- Reviewing individual sales performance
- Developing future sales leaders
- Replacing people who consistently cannot perform
We aren't simply asking you to inherit a great team.
We're hiring you to build one.
BECOME THE OWNER'S RIGHT HAND
This is where this opportunity is different.
We need someone who eventually understands the operation well enough to identify and solve problems before the owner has to get involved.
You will have significant responsibility for the daily business.
That means taking ownership of:
- Sales
- People
- Recruiting
- Scheduling
- Training
- Customer experience
- Lead management
- Merchandising
- Inventory execution
- Marketing execution
- Warehouse coordination
- Cash controls and deposits
- Store standards
- Operational processes
- Performance accountability
- Problem resolution
If something isn't working, we expect you to recognize it.
If something needs to be changed, we expect you to develop a solution.
If someone isn't performing, we expect you to address it.
Ownership is one of the most important qualities we're looking for.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Our ideal candidate has leadership experience in a high-ticket, commission-driven, or performance-based sales environment, such as:
- Furniture
- Appliances
- Mattresses
- Automotive
- Flooring
- Home improvement
- Electronics
- Remodeling/home services
- Other high-ticket sales organizations
However, your specific industry matters less than your proven ability to sell, lead, recruit, develop people, and produce results.
IMPORTANT:
Managing a large retail location by itself does not qualify someone for this position.
We aren't looking for someone whose primary experience has been executing corporate programs, writing schedules, and maintaining an operation someone else built.
We need someone who has personally created results.
BE PREPARED TO TALK NUMBERS
During our interview process, expect us to ask:
- What monthly revenue were you responsible for?
- What sales goals did your team carry?
- How much did you personally sell?
- What was your team's closing percentage?
- How many salespeople have you personally recruited?
- How many have you personally trained?
- Tell us about someone you developed into a top producer.
- Tell us about an underperforming team you turned around.
- What did sales look like before you took over?
- What did sales look like after?
- What specific actions created the improvement?
We want real examples, real numbers, and real results.
YOUR FIRST 30 DAYS
We expect this person to move quickly.
Your first priorities will be:
1. Get on the sales floor and understand how we are currently selling.
2. Begin increasing revenue immediately.
3. Evaluate every member of the existing sales team.
4. Begin recruiting additional sales talent immediately.
5. Improve lead follow-up and closing.
6. Establish clear daily sales expectations and accountability.
7. Identify operational problems that are costing us sales, profit, or customers.
8. Begin taking daily operational responsibility off the owner's plate.
You don't need to know everything on Day One.
But we do expect you to take action from Day One.

For a highly qualified candidate with demonstrated results, the opportunity may include:
- Competitive base compensation
- Performance-based incentives
- Significant upside tied to company performance
- Potential sign-on bonus

If you're looking for a corporate management position where the systems, people, processes, and answers are already provided for you, this probably isn't the right opportunity.
If you're a sales-driven leader who wants to take ownership, produce results, work directly with the owner, and have an opportunity to help build a growing company, we want to hear from you.
Apply with your résumé and be prepared to discuss the actual sales results you've produced and the teams you've built.
