SUMMARY
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Animal Care and Medical Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the Animal Care and Medical departments within the Stray Hearts Animal Shelter. Key responsibilities include supervising the animal care staff to ensure maintenance of sanitary and humane conditions for all animals; monitoring the health (mental and physical) and progress of all animals; creating and enforcing policies and standard operating procedures; managing shelter inventory and ordering processes; and maintaining accurate records and data related to animal care and shelter populations. This position will collaborate with other managers to ensure the effective and consistent delivery of the Stray Hearts mission.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
RESPONSIBILITIES
STAFF SUPERVISION
- Directly supervises the work of the animal care and medical teams.
- With the support of the Executive Director, participates in interviewing, hiring, evaluating and if necessary, terminating employment.
- In conjunction with the Executive Director, ensures new hires, evaluations, performance improvement plans, documentation, and employment terminations are done in accordance with the current policies in the Employee Handbook.
- Supervise, train, and support a team of shelter staff.
- Manage scheduling for animal care and medical team, ensuring sufficient coverage for essential functions
- Manage staff timecards
- Address and resolve interpersonal conflicts among shelter staff and/or members of the public in a timely and professional manner.
- Foster a positive and productive work environment by promoting teamwork, accountability, and professional development.
DAILY OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT
- Ensure all incoming animals in the care of Stray Hearts are afforded the 5 Freedoms:
- Freedom from hunger and thirst
- Freedom from discomfort
- Freedom from pain, injury, and/or disease
- Freedom to express normal behavior
- Freedom from fear and distress
- Provide oversight and coordination of the shelter’s daily functions, including animal intake, care, medical treatment, and housing procedures.
- Monitor their health, behavior, and emotional well-being, collaborating with the animal care team
- Ensure that each animal’s living environment is clean, safe, and conducive to their overall welfare, adhering to the shelter’s high standards of animal care and hygiene
- Answer inquiries, address concerns, and provide clear guidance on shelter policies
- Ensure all operations are conducted efficiently and in alignment with the shelter’s mission and standards
- Manage shelter inventory, ensuring supplies are stocked and on hand at all times
- Help in maintaining comprehensive and accurate records of shelter operations, including animal intake and outcomes, vaccination and medical histories, spay/neuter procedures, and euthanasia, in compliance with reporting standards
- Ensure the shelter facility is maintained in a safe, clean, and functional condition
- Ensure that shelter data entry processes yield accurate data through training and clear standard operating procedures
- Develop, maintain and update all kennel and medical Standard Operating Procedures and Protocols with help of veterinarian and Executive Director
- Support other shelter activities as needed
- Attending community outreach events, and engaging in fundraising efforts, as needed
- Contribute to shelter initiatives and programs aimed at enhancing community engagement, increasing adoptions, and raising necessary funds for ongoing operations.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required
- Previous experience in a direct animal care facility preferred but not required
- Previous customer service experience preferred
- Proven ability to multitask and prioritize in a busy and stressful environment
- Positive with a growth mindset attitude and solution focused approach
- Experience managing a team
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- High degree of mobility required
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. on a regular basis
- Maintain a valid driver’s license in order to operate any Stray Hearts vehicles.
- Frequent exposure and handling of animals
- Work in a stressful and noisy environment
COMPENSATION
This is a salaried, exempt position, full-time, $46,000/year.
