What are the responsibilities and job description for the Substitute Speech and Language Pathologist position at Strafford School District?
Employment Type: Per Diem/On-Call with possible opportunities for long-term assignments.
We are seeking a dedicated and qualified Substitute Speech and Language Pathologist to provide temporary coverage for absent regular Speech and Language Pathologists for grades from K-8.
The primary role is to ensure continuity of speech and language therapy services, manage student caseloads, and maintain a positive, productive learning environment in alignment with established treatment plans and district guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Implement Treatment Plans: Follow documented Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and treatment plans to provide individual and/or group therapy sessions to students with communication disorders.
- Document Progress: Maintain accurate and confidential records of student performance, progress toward meeting established objectives, and attendance in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., Medicaid billing, activity logs, progress reports).
- Assess/Screen (as needed): Conduct screenings, without interpretation, using established protocols developed by the supervising SLP (for SLPAs), or perform comprehensive assessments and evaluations if fully certified.
- Collaborate: Communicate effectively and collaborate with teachers, parents, staff, and other professionals regarding student needs, progress, and carryover activities for the classroom and home environment.
- Manage Equipment: Monitor and ensure the appropriate use and maintenance of therapy materials, equipment, and augmentative/alternative communication (AAC) devices.
- Classroom Management: Maintain classroom order and a safe, inclusive, and positive climate for learning in the absence of the regular SLP.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education: Master's degree from an accredited college/university in Speech-Language Pathology (for SLP) or an Associate's/Bachelor's degree for an SLPA position.
- Certification/License: Valid state certification and current state license in Speech-Language Pathology or as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA).
- Background Check: Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a comprehensive background check (CORI and fingerprinting).
- Knowledge: Working knowledge of special education law and procedures (e.g., IEPs).
- Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication, strong interpersonal skills, adaptability, flexibility, and the ability to work with diverse student populations.
- Experience: Prior experience in a school or pediatric setting is preferred.
