The Certified Substitute Teacher supports Storm Lake Community School District's commitment to ensuring all students achieve at grade level by implementing provided instruction and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment. This role ensures continuity of learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher while fostering positive relationships and upholding classroom expectations.
Essential Responsibilities
Student Learning & Achievement
- Implement lesson plans and instructional activities as provided by the classroom teacher
- Maintain continuity of learning and keep students engaged in academic tasks
- Provide support to meet diverse student needs as appropriate
Relationships & Culture
- Establish a safe, orderly, and inclusive classroom environment that values students' cultures and identities
- Build positive relationships that support student engagement and behavior
- Reinforce classroom expectations and positive behavior supports
Classroom Management & Supervision
- Supervise students in the classroom and during transitions (hallways, lunch, recess, etc.)
- Follow established classroom routines and school procedures
- Respond appropriately to student behavior and ensure a safe environment
Professional Expectations
- Maintain confidentiality and follow FERPA guidelines
- Communicate relevant information to school staff regarding the day's activities
- Refer parent/family communication to the classroom teacher or administration
- Demonstrate flexibility, reliability, and professionalism
Qualifications
- Valid Iowa teaching license or substitute authorization required
- Mandatory reporter training for child abuse
