Position Summary
The Substitute Instructional Assistant supports Storm Lake Community School District's commitment to ensuring all students achieve at grade level by assisting with instruction and supervising students in a safe, inclusive, and student-centered learning environment. This role works under the direction of the classroom teacher to support student learning, maintain routines, and foster positive relationships.
Essential Responsibilities
Student Support & Learning
- Assist students individually or in small groups with academic and behavioral support as directed by the teacher
- Help students stay engaged and participate in classroom activities
- Support implementation of teacher-provided lesson plans and routines
Relationships & Culture
- Help maintain a safe, orderly, and inclusive environment that values students' cultures and identities
- Build positive relationships with students to support engagement and behavior
- Reinforce classroom expectations and positive behavior supports
Classroom & Supervision
- Supervise students in classrooms and during transitions (hallways, lunch, recess, etc.)
- Assist with the organization and cleanup of materials and activities
- Follow all school procedures and staff directions
Professional Expectations
- Maintain confidentiality and follow FERPA guidelines
- Demonstrate reliability, flexibility, and professionalism
- Adapt to different classrooms and student needs
- Support the district's commitment to a student-centered environment
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Experience working with children preferred
- Ability to follow directions and adapt to different settings
- Mandatory reporter training for child abuse (or willingness to obtain)
