Storm Lake High School Athletic Coach Job Description
Position Title: High School Athletic Coach
Reports To: Athletic Director
Position Summary
The High School Athletic Coach plans, organizes, and supervises a high school interscholastic athletic program that supports student-athlete development, safety, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic success. The coach serves as a positive role model and complies with all district, conference, and Iowa licensure requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan and conduct effective practices and competitions.
- Teach sport-specific skills, strategies, and rules.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, leadership, and respect.
- Ensure the safety and supervision of student-athletes at all times.
- Enforce school and district policies and athletic codes of conduct.
- Communicate effectively with student-athletes, families, and school staff.
- Support academic expectations and eligibility requirements.
- Maintain equipment and facilities.
- Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development.
- Follow all district, conference, and state athletic association rules.
Required Licensure
All coaches (paid or volunteer) must hold a valid Iowa Coaching Authorization or Coaching Endorsement through the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners (BoEE).
Minimum requirements include:
- At least 18 years of age and a high school diploma or equivalent
- CPR certification
- NFHS concussion training
- Mandatory reporter training
- Completion of an approved 55-hour coaching course (or equivalent coursework)
Authorization must remain current and in good standing.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of the sport and coaching techniques
- Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
- Ability to work positively with high school students
- Coaching experience preferred, but not required
- Commitment to student safety and well-being
Physical & Work Requirements
- Ability to demonstrate skills and actively supervise students
- Ability to lift and manage athletic equipment
- Evening, weekend, and outdoor work required
