Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham client with its search for a Cost Accountant. The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing costs of production, inventory, labor, and operations to help management make informed financial decisions. This role is especially critical in manufacturing, distribution, and service businesses with complex cost structures.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cost Analysis & Reporting
- Analyze production costs, raw materials, labor, and overhead
- Prepare detailed cost reports and variance analysis (actual vs. budget)
- Identify cost-saving opportunities and inefficiencies
2. Inventory Accounting
- Track inventory valuation (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average)
- Monitor and reconcile inventory accounts
- Work closely with operations on cycle counts and physical inventories
3. Budgeting & Forecasting
- Assist in developing annual budgets and forecasts
- Analyze cost trends and recommend adjustments
- Support financial planning efforts
4. Standard Costing
- Develop and maintain standard costs for products/services
- Analyze variances (material, labor, overhead)
- Update standards based on operational changes
5. Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to reduce costs and improve margins
- Partner with operations, procurement, and leadership
- Support automation or system improvements
6. Compliance & Controls
- Ensure adherence to accounting standards (GAAP)
- Maintain internal controls over cost accounting processes
- Assist with audits
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance
- 2–5 years of accounting or cost accounting experience
- Strong Excel skills (pivot tables, modeling)
- Experience with ERP systems
Salary : $80,000 - $105,000
