Role Description The Associate Attorney – Consumer Bankruptcy will support the organization and its stakeholders by providing legal counsel focused on consumer bankruptcy matters, including Chapters 7 and 13. This full-time hybrid role is based in Southfield, MI, with a combination of in-office work and some work-from-home flexibility. Day-to-day responsibilities include meeting with clients to assess financial situations, advising on bankruptcy options, preparing and reviewing petitions and schedules, filing documents with the court, and appearing at hearings and creditor meetings as needed. The attorney will collaborate with internal staff and external partners to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations, maintain accurate records, and communicate case progress clearly and professionally. The role also involves some occasional legal research, drafting motions and correspondence, and contributing to process improvements that support efficient, ethical, and client-centered representation. Position is supported with three full time legal assistants and two full time paralegals. Full health, dental and vision benefits provided withou contribution. Qualifications

  • Consumer bankruptcy expertise with knowledge of Chapters 7 and 13, bankruptcy procedures, debtor representation, and related federal and state regulations prefered but will train

  • Legal practice skills: Experience in drafting pleadings and motions, reviewing financial documents, and preparing court filings with attention to detail.
  • Courtroom and advocacy skills: Ability to appear at hearings, negotiate with creditors, present arguments effectively, and represent clients professionally before trustees and courts.
  • Client service and communication: Demonstrated skills in client interviewing, explaining complex legal concepts in clear terms, and maintaining respectful, empathetic communication.
  • Organizational and time management skills: Capacity to manage multiple cases, meet deadlines, maintain detailed case files, and work efficiently in a hybrid environment.
  • Collaboration and professionalism: Ability to work well with administrative staff, external partners, and community stakeholders, upholding high ethical standards and confidentiality.
  • Education and licensure: Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and active license to practice law in Michigan; prior consumer bankruptcy experience is strongly preferred.
  • Additional beneficial qualifications: Familiarity with bankruptcy case management software like Bestcase and firm management software Smokeball a plus
