What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 will:
- Perform janitorial services to maintain clean, sanitary, and safe rest area facilities, including cleaning, disinfecting, litter removal, and graffiti removal.
- Operate state vehicles to transport tools, equipment, and supplies between worksites and complete assigned maintenance tasks.
- Maintain grounds through landscaping and vegetation management, including safe operation of equipment and application of chemicals and pesticides.
- Inspect, clean, and maintain RV dump stations and water systems, including chlorination, meter readings, and water sampling in compliance with health standards.
- Conduct daily inspections to identify hazards, vandalism, and unauthorized use, and take appropriate action to ensure public safety.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance, including minor repairs to plumbing, electrical, HVAC systems, and facility equipment.
- Maintain access areas during adverse weather by applying de-icing materials, shoveling, and operating snow removal equipment.
- Provide customer service by assisting travelers with information, supporting volunteer programs, and responding to emergencies or safety concerns.
Qualifications
- Safety Awareness & Compliance: Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and commitment to following safety policies, including traffic awareness, and hazard mitigation in public and highway environments. Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of Pre-Activity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
- Work Documentation and Recordkeeping: Ability to maintain accurate and timely documentation of work activities and time records.
- Work Planning and Task Prioritization: Skills in organizing daily tasks and prioritizing work independently.
- Professional Communication: Skills in communicating clearly and professionally with the public, coworkers, supervisors, and emergency personnel.
- Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
- Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.
In addition to the above, the following are also required:
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
- Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to perform duties at elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid/CPR Certification within 6 months of hire.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, alternate shifts, nights, and extended hours, and respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including occasional call-backs as needed.
- Ability to respond to unscheduled or emergency call-outs, including reporting to the assigned duty station within 60 minutes of an after-hours call.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:
- Grounds and Landscaping Maintenance: Demonstrated experience performing landscaping activities such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.
- Building Maintenance and Minor Repair: Demonstrated experience performing minor repair and maintenance of public buildings to include janitorial duties and plumbing/electrical systems.
- Cleaning Methods and Chemical Handling Knowledge: Demonstrated knowledge of various cleaning agents, including proper mixing ratios, safe handling procedures, and effective application methods to maintain sanitary and compliant facilities.
- Technology and Administrative Tools Proficiency: Experience utilizing computer software such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and mobile devices (e.g., tablets/iPads) to complete reports, communicate, and support daily operations.

- This position involves physically demanding work performed primarily outdoors in all weather conditions, including exposure to traffic, heavy winds, and other hazards during both day and night operations. Employees work near high-volume, high-speed traffic and may perform tasks at ground level or in confined spaces. Duties include operating equipment, performing manual labor, and climbing ladders. The role requires frequent bending, twisting, and standing or walking for extended periods. Employees may also be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals, and environmental conditions, including fuels, solvents, hot asphalt, and other potentially unsafe substances, as well as general sanitation-related conditions.
- In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
