The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 to join the Southwest Region Maintenance organization and provide year-round operational support at the Toutle River Safety Rest Area. Responsibilities include performing rest area maintenance tasks such as cleaning restrooms, removing garbage, general site upkeep, vegetation management, and clearing snow and ice from sidewalks. The role also involves maintaining buildings and grounds, performing janitorial work, making minor repairs, and interacting with the traveling public to help ensure they can safely and efficiently use state highways. This position requires a self-directed individual who takes independent action to resolve maintenance issues as they arise. Work hours include varying shifts, weekends, and holidays, and employees must be able to respond to the rest area, which operates 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
What to Expect
This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed outdoors and inside rest area buildings. Work may include negotiating uneven terrain, working low to the ground, at ground level, or at elevated heights above the head, assisting others and/or working in confirmed spaces, and inclement weather.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:
- Perform a variety of janitorial services at highway safety rest area, including but not limited to cleaning, disinfecting, replenishing supplies, sweeping, and mopping floors in facilities.
- Collect garbage bags and pick up litter and debris in and around rest areas.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entrances.
- Inspect restrooms and perform minor repairs needed to stalls, plumbing, lighting, and paper dispensers.
- Operate tools, equipment and machinery including but not limited to weed cutters, hedge trimmer, and other various hand and electric powered tools.
- Maintain landscaped areas by mowing (riding and push mowers) trimming and pruning trees and shrubbery, weeding flower and shrub beds.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and vehicle records.
- Assist with routine highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails and guardrail posts, minor repairs of signs, and cleaning culverts and ditches.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:
- Facility & Grounds Maintenance: Basic knowledge and proficiency in facility and grounds maintenance, janitorial work, landscaping, and/or vegetation management.
- Tools & Equipment Use: Experience using and servicing a variety of hand tools, power tools, landscaping tools, and other equipment.
- Public Interaction & Relations: Ability to perform work in public access areas, engage in public interaction, and maintain good public relations.
- Computer & Technology Skills: Basic knowledge and proficiency with computers, email, data entry, internet, and mobile devices.
- Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
- Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.
In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
- Ability to obtain CPR/First Aid certification within six (6) months of hire.
- Able to respond (physically arrive) to the Chehalis maintenance facility within 45 minutes.
- Ability and willingness to work varying shifts, including weekends, holidays, and respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions and ability to traverse uneven terrain.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Roadway & Grounds Maintenance Experience: Experience performing roadway maintenance, janitorial work, landscape work, or related experience.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): A valid CDL Class A or B.
- Traffic Control & Flagging: Possession of a valid Traffic Control/Flagging card with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs, devices, and flagging.
- Pesticide Application Certification: Possession of a Washington State Pesticide Applicators License.
- CPR/First Aid Certification: Possession of a CPR/First Aid certification.
