About The Role
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a Journey HVAC Specialist to join our Region Four team. Based out of the Price District Office, this position is primarily responsible for the maintenance and repair of facilities throughout the eastern portion of the region, including Carbon, Emery, Grand, and San Juan counties.
As a key member of our maintenance team, you will manage the upkeep of HVAC/R systems for regional offices and maintenance sheds. While the primary focus is on the Eastern District, this role requires regular travel across Region Four to support departmental needs and large-scale projects. We are looking for a reliable, self-motivated technician who values the autonomy of a travel-based role, the stability of a state career, and the opportunity to support UDOT’s infrastructure throughout Southern Utah.

Position Details
- Salary Range: $22.78 - $36.87 Hourly
- Position Type: Full-Time, Career Service (Schedule B)
- Work Format: On site/In office, UDOT Price District Office (940 S Carbon Ave, Price, UT 84501.)
- Background Check Required: A successful background check is required for this position.

- Operates and maintains low-pressure steam, hot water, and glycol boilers.
- Installs, inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs HVAC systems, equipment, and controls.
- Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.
- Diagnoses system malfunctions and makes necessary adjustments or repairs to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Evacuates, charges, and recovers refrigerants in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Uses and maintains a variety of hand tools, electrical, mechanical, and automotive equipment.
- Trains and mentors staff on HVAC principles, equipment operation, and safety standards.
- Develops and prepares training materials, instructional aids, and documentation.
- Coordinates maintenance activities to support operational and institutional needs.
- Works collaboratively with maintenance and service teams to ensure timely and effective system performance.
- Experience: At least three (3) years of professional HVAC maintenance and repair experience, with experience obtained within the past three years.
- Core Technical Knowledge: Expert-level understanding of HVAC system operations, troubleshooting, and preventative maintenance.
- Specialized Electrical: Ability to troubleshoot and repair HVAC-specific electrical components (e.g., control wiring, thermostats, motors, and circuits).
- Logistics: Possession of a valid driver’s license and the ability to travel regularly within the Region Four area.
- Soft Skills: Proven ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with strong customer service and verbal communication skills.
Ideal candidates will also possess one or more of the following:
- Advanced Experience: 5 years of HVAC experience, particularly in public-sector or large-scale facility environments.
- Education/Training: Technical certificate or Associate degree in HVAC-R, Mechanical Systems, or a related field.
- Certifications: EPA Section 608 Universal, NATE, or OSHA safety certifications.
- Cross-Trade Skills: Proficiency in brazing/welding techniques and a practical understanding of plumbing systems (e.g., condensate drains, boilers, or hydronic systems).
- Technology: Experience utilizing Building Automation Systems (BAS) or Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS).

Physical Demands & Work Environment
- Response Time: Must reside within a 30-minute response time of the Price office under normal traffic conditions and in compliance with traffic laws.
- Physicality: Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. on a recurring basis.
- Environment: Ability to work in confined spaces, at heights (ladders/roofs), and in extreme weather conditions.
- Safety: Exposure to high-voltage electricity, pressurized systems, and hazardous chemicals; strict adherence to PPE and LOTO protocols is required.
- Availability: Must be available for a rotating 24-hour on-call schedule for emergency repairs.
