A Fire Protection Plans Examiner analyzes and interprets complex construction documents, including review of fire alarm and fire protection systems, fire and life safety code compliance and firefighter safety for the State Fire Marshal's Office.
General Duties
- Review fire alarm and/or fire sprinkler systems.
- Review and interpret building and construction documents and reports for schools (K-12 and Charter); state-owned universities; state owned properties; nursing homes, assisted living facilities (including memory care and other related type facilities) and related projects to ensure compliance with state adopted codes, ordinances, standards, and amendments.
- Advise architects, engineers, contractors, the general public, and staff on code changes, interpretations, new methods and materials; negotiates solutions to code conformance problems and fire and life safety issues.
- Identify inadequacies found on construction plans, reports and calculations, and required corrections.
- Negotiate and develop mutually acceptable solutions to code conformance problems and life safety issues with architects, engineers, contractors, and the public.
- Assist Fire Marshal and staff by recommending changes in codes to resolve interpretation problems and to accommodate and control new methods and materials.
- Assist fire inspectors with field reviews of structures to determine code and plan review compliance as well as proper installation of materials and/or equipment.
- Participate as a committee member in various local, state, and other professional organizations to discuss code related issues and attend meetings relating to plan review, building safety, fire and life safety, and construction.
- Provide training to fire service professionals and other interested parties.
- Provide technical assistance and assist with inspection of complex fire safety features and systems.
- Provide assistance, direction, and training to professional associations.
An ideal candidate will have the knowledge of:
- General fire safety and plan review
- Building fire safety components
- Design and layout of fire alarm and/or fire sprinkler systems
- Plan review of fire alarm, fire sprinkler systems, and/ or general fire safety
- Major types of building construction, materials, and methods
- Building, fire and related codes, regulations, and standards
- Fire protection engineering principles and types of fire detection systems
- Engineering principles in the design of protection and/or detection systems
- Field inspection procedures and techniques
- Computers and their applications in plan review
- Apply engineering knowledge and follow proper plan check techniques to examine workmanship and materials; and detect deviations from plans, regulations, and standard construction practices.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with architects, engineers, contractors, staff, and the general public.
- Read, interpret, and explain codes, engineering calculations, building plans, plot surveys, specifications, and blueprints.
- Interpret and apply federal and state codes, rules and standards.
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Explain code requirements and plan review procedures to persons with various backgrounds.
- Successfully resolve problems with a diverse group of people.
- Develop and present training on fire prevention and code related subjects.
- Work independently and perform tasks involving numerous details.
- Concentrate and have an accurate analysis and interpretation of a set of highly technical construction documents.
- An International Fire Code certification (ICC) as a Fire Plans Examiner.
- An International Fire Code certification (IFC) as an Inspector II
- An NFPA certification as a Fire Plans Examiner
- NICET certification in Water Based Systems layout, Fire Alarm Systems, or Special Hazard Systems.
- Current employees of the Utah Department of Public Safety.
- Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
- Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working with contagious diseases or hazardous chemicals, etc. Intensive field work at construction sites and completed building.
- Valid driver license required to drive a motor vehicle on a highway in this state.
