The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a qualified Professional Engineer to join our Region Three North Construction Crew as a Field Engineer (Engineer III).

Engineer III – Salary Range: $37.46 – $60.77

This position may be filled at the Engineer II level for applicants who do not currently hold a Utah PE license.
Engineer II – Salary Range: $34.39 – $57.57
(Starting rate is $40.24 or higher, depending on experience; candidates who pass the PE exam may receive an additional 6%)

As a Field Engineer, you will play a vital role in supporting the successful delivery of multiple construction projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Assisting the Resident Engineer with personnel coordination, scheduling, budgeting, reporting, risk management, and crew resources.
- Spending significant time in the field to stay informed on project progress and activities across multiple projects.
- Providing engineering support and resolving construction issues in real time.
- Reviewing and tracking contractor submittals for compliance with plans and specifications.
- Preparing detailed cost estimates, technical reports, and analyses to support contract modifications (change orders).
- Assisting in training field personnel, including reviewing inspection documentation and calculations for accuracy and completeness.
- Supporting material testing, interpreting results, and determining applicable incentives or penalties.
- Coordinating with stakeholders such as local agencies, utility companies, and the public.
- Independently managing smaller projects, as assigned.
- Monitoring construction contracts to ensure compliance with scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements.
- Collaborating with team members to successfully deliver assigned projects.
- Building the knowledge and skills needed for advancement within the Department.
Engineer III – Salary Range: $37.46 – $60.77
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in the State of Utah.
- Experience administering heavy civil construction projects, including reviewing plans and specifications for constructability.
- Experience working collaboratively with contractors, public agencies, and other project stakeholders.
- Knowledge of construction contract principles and their application in project delivery.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly and effectively convey information.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze and resolve complex issues.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Ability to mentor, train, and provide leadership to team members.
- Self-motivated with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Experience administering heavy civil construction projects, particularly in construction or materials engineering.
- Knowledge of the UDOT partnering process and the ability to build and maintain positive working relationships.
- Proficiency with CADD software, including MicroStation, and 3D modeling.
This position may be filled at the Engineer II level for applicants who do not currently hold a Utah PE license.
Engineer II – Salary Range: $34.39 – $57.57
(Starting rate is $40.24 or higher, depending on experience; candidates who pass the PE exam may receive an additional 6%)
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
- Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
- At least two (2) years of post-graduate engineering experience. ( A Master’s degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of experience).

- Work Schedule: This position may require varied shifts, including weekends, nights, and holidays.
- Travel: Occasional travel to project sites, meetings, and other locations is required.
- Working Conditions: Work is performed in construction environments and may involve exposure to operating machinery and other safety risks. Appropriate safety precautions and equipment are required.
- Physical Requirements: Moderate physical activity is required, including standing, walking over uneven surfaces, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting items up to 50 lbs. on a recurring basis.
