Description of Work

Responsibilities

This position is located at Western Correctional Center for Women in Buncombe County NC. The primary purpose of this position is to provide administrative support to the Facility Warden. The Administrative Specialist I will be responsible for Administrative Support including:

  • Prepare documents and reports for data in assigned departments.
  • Assist the Public/Staff, Customer Service, and work with others in a professional manner on a daily basis.
  • Communicate Information, perform duties relating to needs of assigned departments, i.e.
  • Complete data entry, records and reports management, filing, office equipment operation, word processing, public contact, composition, processing mail and other functions.
  • Distribute media through telephone, computer, correspondence in a professional manner with specific needs providing accurate information.
  • Provide confidentiality, accuracy, timeliness and completion in accordance with policy.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits. Work hours: 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday.

The salary grade for this position is NC08. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Western Correctional Center For Women (WCCW)

Western Correctional Center for Women (formerly Swannanoa Correctional Center for Women) opened on July 7, 2008 and is a minimum custody facility housing approx. 360 female offenders located in Black Mountain, NC. WCCW renovated four dormitories: Greenwood, Frye, Sloop and Gilliat. Renovations on the vocation building provided offenders with an educational classroom and an operating greenhouse. Renovations to the Buchanan building accommodated the increasing offender population and offer more educational classrooms and a medical wing. On Oct. 4, 2021, the facility's name was changed to Western Correctional Center for Women.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities / Competencies

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed from the class specification. The knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the vacancy announcement should be used as management preferences and be used to screen for the most qualified pool of applicants.

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
