The Materials Testing Laboratory provides all technical support regarding the design, use, evaluation and research associated with all construction materials.
As a valued new employee to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT), you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Why does the job exist?
This position is responsible for the units that perform all test on aggregates, concrete, soils and other materials associated with highway construction. Reviews and approves all concrete mix designs and adjustment request to confirm compliance with department specifications and required performance properties for all construction projects within NMDOT. Works closely with Architectural Design and Engineering (ADE)'s Construction and Project Managers from all six (6) districts in regards to soils testing and concrete issues and concerns.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and eight (8) years of engineering experience, four (4) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer and (2) years of experience in a supervisory/managerial role. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical. Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results.

Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting. Exposure to: Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT), extensive personal computer and phone usage. Communication with the general public and public agencies on a frequent basis. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to meet multiple deadlines. Occasional statewide and out of state travel maybe required.

- Management and supervision of three (3) Materials Testing Units: Entry Prep, Soils Testing, and Concrete Testing.
- Review and approve all concrete mix designs for NMOT construction projects.
- Develop and modify NMDOT specifications and special provisions regarding soils and concrete materials and testing for construction.
- Works closely with private testing labs and district labs in order to make sure they adhere to American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) resource and NMDOT specs.
- Works closely with Bridge Design, Foundation Design, and all six (6) districts in the development of projects as it relates to soil and concrete specifications and plans.
