This position will be part of the Department of Public Safety within the New Mexico State Police, Digital Forensic Support Unit, which Is part of the Investigation Bureau.
Why does the job exist?

Digital forensic Support Unit (DFSU) Senior Public Safety Investigator will provide Investigative and analytical expertise by working complex criminal Investigations with other investigators and officers of all divisions within the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and NM State Police (NMSP) as well as other local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to aid in the Identification, arrest, prosecution and conviction of criminal suspects. Conduct highly technical analyses and procedures In the collection, processing, preservation and presentation of digital evidence to assist law enforcement; act as a technical expert within the department regarding Computer Forensics; prepare detailed reports of investigations and analysis; assist prosecuting attorneys with trial preparation to coordinate digital evidence presentation; make court appearance and give testimony relating to cases; and deploy into the field to locate digital evidence at crime scenes and search warrant services.
How does it get done?

Conduct seizures and examinations of electronic devices including cell phones, tablets, laptops, personal computers and corresponding electronic data storage media to secure and recover data as evidence.

Conduct on site forensic analysis previews of digital evidence. Act as subject matter expert, make determinations and recommendations regarding appropriate items to be seized based on search warrant particulars and relevant case law. Compose reports on findings from digital evidence extraction and analysis. Put together all relevant case information in easy to understand format. Present the case to prosecutors and defense teams for mandatory, pretrial defense interviews. Present case in trial and respond to questions regarding findings. Collect, preserve, label, catalog and store evidential items for presentation in criminal proceedings in accordance with legal standards.

Examinations will be made for New Mexico State Police, as well as other state, city and federal agencies.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements

Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.

In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working Conditions

Office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal and extensive personal computer usage. Travel will be required, including occasional overnight trips for search warrants and training. Candidates will be subject to call outs. They must have or be able to obtain a New Mexico driver's license in order to receive a certification to drive a state vehicle upon employment.

Working in a law enforcement environment and exposure to law enforcement investigations and crime scene.
