The New Mexico State Police Intelligence Unit exists to provide investigative and analytical expertise by working criminal investigations with investigators and officers of all divisions within the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (NMDPS) / New Mexico State Police (NMSP), as well as other local, state, and federal enforcement agencies to aid in the identification, arrest, prosecution, and conviction of criminal suspects.
Why does the job exist?
Provide investigative and intelligence expertise by working on complex criminal investigations with other investigators and officers of all divisions within the Department of Safety (DPS) and NM State Police (NMSP), as well as other local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, to aid in the identification, arrest, prosecution, and conviction of criminal suspects. Provides criminal intelligence in the areas of gun crimes, narcotics, and criminal organizations. Also assist other sections of the NMSP Intelligence Unit, including Criminal Intelligence, and data analysis.
How does it get done?
Coordinates and conducts tactical analysis of complex criminal/financial cases by collecting, organizing, and analyzing large amounts of diverse information to identify the critical elements of a case. Use databases and other sources to identify and locate people involved in criminal activity, establish connections, and develop leads.
Assists law enforcement agencies around the state to participate in investigations and operations, including, but not limited to, identifying evidence, scene investigation, conducting interviews, organizing leads, and providing feedback to law enforcement officers. Creates documents for wanted suspects, crime trends, officer safety, and investigative findings. Develops presentations to explain work findings and educates others on the investigator's role and duties. Identifies and locates people involved with criminal activity.
Finds connections, develops leads, and gathers intelligence in criminal investigations through database searches, internet research, information from various agencies, and case file reviews. Conducts threat assessments of individuals and events. Creates, prepares, and determines the relevance of various law intelligence documents pertaining to wanted suspects, crime trends, and officer safety for dissemination.
Provides testimony in administrative, civil, criminal, or other proceedings concerning methodology for drawing conclusions and investigative findings. Investigators must be comfortable presenting to groups of people with varying levels of education and experience in law enforcement.
Educates and mentors less experienced investigators on methods of investigation through training. More experienced investigators teach less experienced investigators how to sift through gapped, conflicting, and redundant information to identify suspects, develop intelligence, and provide leads in investigations. Maintains confidentiality of law enforcement sensitive documents and confidential sources and adheres to policy and procedures set forth by local, state, and federal governing agencies.
Assists prosecutors in determining charges in criminal court proceedings and provides expert testimony in criminal or other proceedings concerning investigative and analytical findings. Prepares detailed reports and oral briefings, which include charts, graphs, and spreadsheets to reflect information gathered through interviews, evidence collection, analyses of public documents, and research relating to organizational entities and/or individuals being investigated.
Employs various sophisticated research methods to compile evidence of criminal acts and provide comprehensive facts and details on criminal suspects/subjects which aid/result in their identification, location, and apprehension.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling four (4) years may substitute for the required education.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.
In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting within a law enforcement environment, with exposure to confidential and disturbing information, extensive computer usage, and high-volume caseloads. Incumbent must have the ability to complete assignments with a high level of accuracy within strict time constraints. Incumbent must be comfortable with a high stress environment and will be required to work in close proximity with commissioned law enforcement officers who carry weapons. Some statewide and out of state travel is required.
Occasional travel within the state in support of various criminal investigations and training will be required. Incumbent is required to be on call during off duty time and is required to answer a department issued cell phone and provide assistance after hours and on weekends during the time they are scheduled to be on call. Ability to maintain adherence to strict confidentiality. Periodic exposure to machinery, biohazards, chemicals, loud noises, including fire and firearms, violent death, and other types of crime scenes.
