Why does the job exist?
The Lead Paralegal position exists to support the OSE General Counsel with legal support, scheduling, and office management needs. Litigation support needs include preparing and filing pleadings, and litigation experience is a must. Experience with electronic file management is preferred. The General Counsel oversees a program of approximately 60 employees, and the lead paralegal will help manage the General Counsel's schedule, prepare the General Counsel's travel documents, and organize the general counsel's files. During the legislative session, the lead paralegal will be heavily involved in the agency's process for responding to legislative bill analysis requests, and will be a key point of contact for the legislature.
How does it get done?
This position will:
1. Provide legal support to the General Counsel.
2. Manage electronic records/files for the General Counsel.
3. Prepare travel documents for the General Counsel.
4. Greet/be first point of contact for visitors to the Litigation and Adjudication Program building.
5. During the legislative session, coordinate process for responding to legislative bill analysis requests.

Minimum Qualification
Associate degree in Paralegal Studies and four (4) years of work experience drafting and preparing legal correspondence, conducting legal research, and maintaining a case management/tracking system. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements
This position is required to drive a state vehicle. Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting with extensive exposure to personal computer and phone usage. Some travel may be required with an ability to handle tight deadlines and multiple demands related to work requirements. Communicate effectively through telephone, email, writing, and leadership advisement.
