What are the responsibilities and job description for the Roadside Development Herbicide Applicator position at State of Louisiana?
The overall function of this position is to provide DOTD with a well-trained, government-certified herbicide applicator responsible for the proper application of a variety of chemicals across a wide range of geographic landscapes within assigned parish(es) of Louisiana. This position reports directly to the Parish Highway Maintenance Superintendent of Unit 570 (Red River Maintenance Unit). The incumbent must have specialized knowledge of appropriate application rates, methods, and chemical selection for targeted vegetation, as well as expected results. The position is also responsible for maintaining herbicide inventory and ensuring compliance with all safety standards, including reading and interpreting product labels and safety data sheets to protect the public, the environment, and the employee.

Job Duties:
- Applies herbicides to control roadside vegetation using spray trucks, tractor-mounted equipment, and handheld/backpack sprayers across highways, bridges, signs, and drainage areas.
- Measures, mixes, and handles herbicides; loads equipment; maintains safety documentation (MSDS), calibration, spill response readiness, and accurate application records.
- Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on spray equipment to ensure safe and effective operation.
- Completes miscellaneous duties as needed, including vegetation removal, debris cleanup, brine application, and equipment/material handling during non-spraying periods or emergencies.
- Provides functional supervision and training to support staff, attends required training/recertification, and participates in DOTD training programs while assisting with emergency/disaster response as needed.

License Requirements Before Permanent Status: Louisiana Class "A" CDL License and a current Herbicide Equipment Applicator License issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture
