ROADSIDE DEVELOPMENT HERBICIDE APPLICATOR
The overall function of this position is to provide DOTD/Maintenance Operations with well-trained, government certified herbicide applicators that can properly and efficiently apply a variety of chemicals to roadside rights-of-way. This position is located in District 61/Unit 765 East Baton Rouge Parish and reports directly to the Highway Foreman 2. Occasionally the incumbent will be required to work in one or more of the parishes that comprise District 61. The incumbent must be self-motivated, able to perform duties with or without minimal supervision and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in appropriate DOTD structured training programs as appropriate and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks.

- Herbicide Application: Operate 1,000- 1,600 gallon tank mounted sprayer to maintain roadside vegetation along state highways, around bridge railings, abutments, highway signs, traffic control devices, drainage structures, and drainage channels by application of appropriate herbicides. Responsible for handling, measuring, and mixing proper amounts of appropriate herbicides as needed. Make minor repairs to equipment and perform routine maintenance necessary to keep equipment clean and in good working order.
- Maintain a current copy of all Material Safety Data Sheetsand precise daily record of all herbicides applied as required by DOTD and the Department of Agriculture and Forestry. Conduct a monthly inventory of in stock herbicides.
- Provide lead worker guidance and instruction to assigned work groups.
- Miscellaneous Duties: During adverse weather conditions and times when herbicides are not being applied, or as instructed by supervisor, the Roadside Development Herbicide Applicator shall perform other duties and operate equipment such as but not limited to the following: power and hand tools in the removal of trees, tree branches and other vegetation that may be encroaching onto state right-of-way or which may create a sight obstruction for motorists. Assist with directional arrow on spray rigs in emergency situations. Apply deicing material to bridge decks and other approximate structures during freezing weather. Unloading and loading of material or equipment.
Position-Specific Details:
Candidates will be required to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator License for Right of Way & Industrial Pest Control issued by the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry and a valid Louisiana Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) before appointment.
Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional. Permanent status classified state employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if selected.
Compensation: Starting salary for a Roadside Development Herbicide Applicator is $22.52/hr with the maximum being $40.53/hr.
