The Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory seeks a dependable, motivated Crime Lab Evidence Specialist to support evidence intake and control operations. This vacancy may be filled as a Crime Lab Evidence Specialist 1, 2, or 3, depending on the selected applicant’s qualifying crime laboratory experience.The Crime Lab Evidence Specialist receives, evaluates, documents, stores, routes, and coordinates the return or authorized disposition of evidence in accordance with laboratory procedures. This position helps maintain the chain of custody, ensures that evidence submissions meet laboratory acceptance requirements and service capabilities, protects evidence from contamination or spoliation, and maintains complete and accurate evidence records.


The ideal candidate will be organized, detail-oriented, and able to follow precise procedures while handling sensitive evidence. This position requires sound judgment, clear communication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to accuracy, safety, accountability, and public service. Prior crime laboratory experience is not required for appointment at Level 1. Employees appointed at that level learn the laboratory’s processes and procedures under close supervision.
Possession of a high school diploma or a GED.

As a Crime Lab Evidence Specialist, this position supports the secure intake, custody, tracking, storage, routing, and return or authorized disposition of evidence submitted by local, state, and federal law enforcement and prosecutorial agencies. Duties may include:
• Receiving and evaluating evidence for acceptance while documenting the chain of custody.
• Entering and updating evidence information and maintaining accurate records.
• Safeguarding, storing, routing, and returning evidence while preventing loss, contamination, or spoliation.
• Maintaining evidence inventories and identifying and reporting discrepancies.
• Safely handling firearms, drugs, body fluids, and other potentially hazardous evidence.
• Advising submitting agencies about evidence collection, packaging, submission, and return requirements.
• Preparing reports and testifying, when required, about the chain of custody and condition of evidence.
• Developing and maintaining professional and cooperative working relationships with laboratory personnel, law enforcement agencies, and other customers.

Responsibilities vary according to the level at which the position is filled:
• Level 1 learns procedures and performs basic duties under close supervision.
• Level 2 performs experienced evidence custodian duties more independently, including routine inventory checks.
• Level 3 handles complex evidence and may train or guide personnel, review records, resolve discrepancies, support compliance, and recommend procedural changes.

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Crime Lab Evidence Specialist 1, 2, or 3.
Work Schedule: Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.
Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
