State Fund is seeking an Assistant Underwriting Manager to play a pivotal role in our mission to provide fairly-priced workers' compensation insurance to Middle Market businesses. As an Assistant Underwriting Manager, you will lead and develop a team of Underwriters and Support Staff, ensuring exceptional service delivery to our customers while maintaining underwriting excellence.
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Underwriting Manager, the incumbent will:
- Manage the underwriting function of a Regional Office to achieve Budget Plan objectives in compliance with corporate and regulatory advisories, guidelines and procedures and through the effective use of available resources
- Effectively manage and develop staff and ensure employee engagement is maintained
- Interact across other regions, departments, and business segments to meet operational
- needs and enterprise objectives
The successful candidate for this position will:
- Manage all aspects of the LA region underwriting practice and policy servicing functions in compliance with corporate underwriting and marketing advisories, guidelines and procedures.
- Oversee the acquisition, development, profitability and retention of an assigned book of business.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Underwriters and Support Staff
- Contribute to the Policy Operations and Regional Office management team
- Establish and maintain professional working relationships with the broker community and monitor broker trends.
- Review and approve complex underwriting decisions within authority limits
- Ensure compliance with underwriting guidelines, regulations, and company policies
- Collaborate with other departments to optimize customer experience
- Analyze market trends and recommend strategic initiatives
- Drive continuous improvement in processes and workflows
- Participate in recruitment, training, and performance management
The successful candidate should possess the following necessary skills:
- Strong analytical, organizational and time management skills
- Assess and monitor optimal performance, work-flow process and workload balance
- Proficient knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of personnel management and supervision to oversee the work activities of the staff and ensure employee engagement
- Technical underwriting skills that allow for evaluation of risk, appropriate pricing and determination of effective servicing of business written and retained
- Ability to write professional and accurate reports as well as the ability to coordinate, facilitate, make presentations and speak in front of large groups
Business travel may occasionally be from overnight to five days in duration and may include, but not be limited to, plane, bus, van, taxi, or car. Travel to various work sites and locations for training and/or meetings may be necessary and work hours may vary. The L.A. Region territory covers Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties. You may be requested to travel outside the L.A. County for industry events.

Working Conditions
The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.
Selected candidate(s) hired may be required to attend in-person Onboarding at our Vacaville office with expenses for attendance paid by State Fund.
Salary : $90,960 - $112,992
