The Medical Assistant assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of a physician.  S/he interviews patients, measures vital signs (i.e. pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height) and records information on patient’s chart.  The Medical Assistant may need to draw and collect blood samples from patients and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.  S/he prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients, answers phones, schedules appointments, and general office duties.

 

Qualifications:

 Required Education:

  •  High school diploma or GED or the combination of education, knowledge, skills, mental development, and relevant experience that enables performance of all aspects of the position.
  • Completion of an approved accredited Medical Assistant Program. 

 

Desirable Education:

  • Nationally Certified Medical Assistant.

 

Desirable Experience:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of Medical Assistant experience in a health care setting.

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

General:

1. Act as receptionist and receive and direct patients, answer telephones, screen calls, and relay messages to appropriate physicians.

2. Perform other clerical duties as assigned.

3. Consistently demonstrate courtesy when answering telephones.

4. Order, receive, store, and maintain office supplies at appropriate level.

5. Interview new patients and collect data of patient’s history and record in medical record.

6. Schedule patient appointments.

7. Assist in scheduling patients for surgical procedures.

8. Weigh patients and record in medical records.

9. Triage patients and take vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, etc.  Report any abnormal findings to the Physician.  Record the findings in the Patient Care Record.

10. Perform waived test (urine dipstick) after competency completed.

11. Collect and assist with the collection of urine, sputum, and stool.  Label all specimens for the laboratory and clock-in the time on the lab slip and place them in the appropriate area.  Deliver samples within 15 minutes if stat venipuncture.

12. Determine the gestational age/EDC using the Matria wheel.

13. Assist in maintaining clean, neat exam rooms and ensure the room is stocked with appropriate supplies.

14. Assist physician with procedures by providing needed supplies. 

15. Provide privacy and emotional support for the patient.

16. Assist with preparation/set-up for colposcopy procedures and circumcisions.

17. Administer injections under the supervision of the physician.

18. Assemble new charts for first visit patients.

19. Insert reports and test results in the medical record in a timely manner for review by the physician.

20. Document test results on the ACOG form in the medical record.

21. Forward copies of prenatal records to desired and appropriate hospital at 36 weeks.

22. Use the ECARE/thin on-line computer program for insurance verification.

23. Consistently apply and adhere to isolation procedures and techniques.

24. Collect and bag soiled linen and discard appropriately.

25. Assist patients in exam room for purposes such as the bathroom; to sit in chair; or to walk around.

26. Maintain awareness of comfort and safety needs of patients.

27. Participate in department or unit quality improvement activities.

28. Advocate and support unit, hospital, and nursing activities.

29. Achieve and maintain competency in skills and comply with policies associated with the skills inventory.
