Job Summary:
The Specimen Processing Technician I (SPT I) is responsible for performing general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires strong data entry skills and attention to detail. Duties may include, but are not limited to, A-station processing, presort activities, specimen pickup and delivery, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
All functions must be performed accurately, efficiently, and with confidence. The role requires good organizational skills, flexibility, and the ability to learn and understand specimen types related to ordered tests. The SPT I must also stay current on compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change frequently.
This position is critical to ensuring quality and customer satisfaction. The work environment is dynamic, with frequent changes and varying demands from internal and external customers. Most SPT I positions are night shift, but flexibility to work weekends, holidays, on-call shifts, and overtime as needed is required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform specimen processing functions including presort, data entry, centrifugation, and aliquoting.
- Ensure specimens are properly handled, labeled, and delivered to the appropriate testing areas.
- Maintain productivity and quality standards within departmental completion times.
- Enter data accurately at a rate of approximately 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Work safely in a biohazard environment, adhering to all safety and compliance policies.
- Keep work area clean and organized.
- Communicate effectively with all levels of staff and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.
- Show flexibility and adaptability in response to changing priorities and workloads.
Education and Experience:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Knowledge: Basic computer skills required; familiarity with laboratory testing or specimen processing preferred.
- Experience: No prior experience required; however, previous laboratory or production environment experience is preferred.
- Preferred Background: Medical or hospital laboratory experience, including familiarity with medical terminology relevant to a clinical lab setting.

Pay: $16.00 - $20.00 per hour
