Mechanical HVAC Designer
Job Description
We are seeking an HVAC Designer to support the design, layout, and modeling of HVAC systems for complex engineering projects. This role will be responsible for preparing 2D and 3D HVAC design deliverables, developing airflow diagrams and P&IDs, supporting equipment selection, reviewing vendor documentation, and ensuring designs meet client standards and project requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience with HVAC layout and modeling, duct sizing, air device selection, damper selection, material take-offs, and coordination within a multidisciplinary project environment. This role may support projects in nuclear, industrial, commercial, manufacturing, pharmaceutical/biotech, or government environments. The self-assessment highlights core duties including 2D HVAC layouts, airflow diagrams, P&IDs, equipment selection, duct sizing/layout, 3D HVAC and equipment modeling, SmartPlant 3D/Navisworks/AutoCAD/Revit proficiency, QC support, and supplier document review.
Responsibilities
- Prepare 2D HVAC layouts and advanced CAD drawings
- Develop airflow diagrams and P&IDs
- Perform duct sizing and layout
- Size and select duct accessories, air devices, fire dampers, and barometric dampers
- Support HVAC equipment selection and procurement activities
- Review vendor equipment documentation for compliance with project requirements
- Develop material take-offs, estimates, and track design changes
- Create and update 3D HVAC and equipment models
- Model 3D ductwork and develop layout drawings
- Review model accuracy against supplier-furnished documentation
- Perform drawing checks for uniformity and project compliance
- Follow client design criteria, standards, and internal procedures
- Support quality control activities, including reports and documentation
- Organize and prioritize multiple project assignments to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- AS, BS, or other relevant technical degree
- CHD or other relevant HVAC/design certifications preferred
- Experience with Autodesk AutoCAD, Revit, Bentley MicroStation, Bluebeam, Adobe, SmartPlant 3D, and Navisworks
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Visio
- Experience supporting projects in nuclear, industrial, manufacturing, commercial, pharmaceutical/biotech, oil and gas, or government environments.
