Job Title: Registered Behavior Technician

 

Department: Special Education

 

Reports to:  Special Education Director 

 

Work Schedule: 6.5 hours per day - 180 days per year. For 2026-27 School Year.

 

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Job Summary

The Behavior Intervention Specialist is a district-wide position that supports students, by addressing social, emotional, and behavioral needs to promote student success. This role collaborates with staff to implement evidence-based behavior supports and interventions, while prioritizing student dignity, inclusion, and reducing the use of isolation and restraint.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Recognize individual student learning needs and develop strategies to address those needs for the purpose of promoting individual achievement and success.
  • May support general education and special education students in PK-12 settings and transitional programs.
  • Implement positive behavioral interventions and supports.
  • Provide crisis response and management for students who are experiencing significant behavioral and emotional challenges.
  • Serves on teams to develop interventions, functional behavior assessments and behavior support plans for the purpose of providing a safe and effective educational environment for students.
  • Design and supervise behavior interventions in collaboration with various school teams.
  • Work effectively and cooperatively with students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and community members.
  • Support district goal in reducing incidents of isolation and restraint.
  • Maintain student records and confidentiality.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrates responsiveness and effectiveness in working with students, families, and colleagues from diverse backgrounds and identities.
  • Implements trauma-informed practices to support student safety, belonging, and engagement.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based behavior support strategies, including implementation of Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
  • Models, teaches, and reinforces positive, prosocial student behavior in a culturally responsive manner.
  • Demonstrates effective problem-solving when supporting students with behavioral and mental health needs.
  • Safely implements crisis intervention strategies, including physical restraint when necessary, in accordance with district policy and state law, prioritizing student dignity and safety.
  • Utilizes and supports a variety of assistive technologies and specialized programs to enhance student access and learning.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for collaborating with school personnel and reporting data.
  • Ability to adapt behavioral techniques on-the-fly to meet changing needs in a dynamic school setting.

 

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current Registered Behavior Technician Certification
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of two years of previous experience supporting the behavioral needs of children in school or community setting preferred.
  • Experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Holds current Right Response certification or is willing to obtain certification.
  • Holds current Ukeru certification or is willing to obtain certification.
  • Valid Washington State Driver License.

 

Working Conditions

  • This is a field job.
  • The noise level in the work environment is acceptable to this particular environment and can vary depending upon daily activity but will remain within acceptable ranges.
  • Regular interaction with students who may be experiencing dysregulation.
  • Physical exertion and movement, including running, may be a regular part of this position.
  • Will be evaluated by the Director of Student Services. This process will include an evaluation of the employee’s performance of the essential duties and responsibilities outlined above.
