What You’ll Do:
Didactic and Clinical Learning: Complete online academic coursework through NHTI Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Program, and shadow Clinical Instructor
Demonstrate Proficiency: Proficiency in a clinical skill is achieved when the Clinical Instructor has observed the trainee perform the required skill 3 times without cues or input from the instructor. Once proficiency has been achieved, regularly perform the duties of a Medical Assistant, including but not limited to:
Obtaining vital signs, reviewing and entering patient medications and allergies
Administering immunizations and/or medications as directed by the provider and documenting in the EMR
Performing C LIA waived in office testing and documenting results in EMR
Performing ECGs as directed by the provider
Performing clerical duties as needed

Program Duration:
The MA training program should take one year from start to finish, but may vary depending on the individual, the time required to demonstrate competency, and full completion of academic coursework. Should the trainee require additional time to complete the academic coursework, the supervisor will need to complete a learning needs assessment and present a plan for completion.
During the first three months of the program, the employee will be designated as a “Medical Assistant Apprentice.” Please see Medical Assistant Apprentice job description. An MA apprentice is limited in the tasks that they can perform independently, based on the completion of competencies and the discretion of the clinical instructor. MA apprentices may not give injections or enter orders into the medical record.
Once the apprentice has successfully completed their initial 3 months, is enrolled in the academic program, and has demonstrated proficiency in at least 50% of the clinical competencies, their title will be changed to Medical Assistant. If the candidate was hired internally, their compensation can be reconsidered at this time.
Certification should be successfully achieved within 12 months of starting the Apprentice position.
2-Year Commitment
The medical assistant apprenticeship program represents a significant financial commitment on the part of Speare Memorial Hospital. Trainees who are selected to participate in the MA training program will be asked to sign a commitment to stay with the organization for at least two full years following completion of the program. Employees who terminate their employment before the end of the two year commitment will reimburse a pro-rated amount of the cost of the NHTI program.
