Custodian

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is under the general supervision of the Risk Management Department. The Custodian position will be responsible for ensuring a clean, safe, and sanitary environment at each assigned location. This position requires the ability to travel between various sites, adapt to different facility needs, and maintain consistent quality standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Perform routine building maintenance including cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, and disinfecting surfaces.
• Clean and maintain restrooms, break rooms, office spaces, and public areas.
• Empty trash and recycling receptacles and replace liners.
• Stocks and maintains various dispensers including soap, toilet tissue/paper towels, cleaning supplies, etc.
• Perform minor maintenance and report major repair needs to supervisor.
• Follow established cleaning schedules and checklists for each location.
• Transport and manage cleaning equipment and supplies between job sites.
• Secure buildings upon completion of tasks, if working after hours.
• Comply with safety regulations and utilize protective gear as required.
• May also buff/wax floors, spot clean carpeted areas, polish and clean wood fixtures, disinfect and chemically treat restroom facilities and water fountains.
• May be required to operate other commercial equipment when needed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) is preferred.
• Knowledge of computers required to use email and work order system.
• Ability to read and write.
• Ability to communicate in verbal and written form.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to use or repair small and medium equipment and machinery.
• Ability to travel reliably between multiple locations.
• Strong attention to detail and time management skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Availability for early morning, evening, or weekend shifts as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the employee to reach with hands and arms; stand and walk for long periods; bend; use hands to handle, feel, finger, grasp or operate objects, tools or controls; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; use repetitive motion; and talk and hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to fifty (50) pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

• Previous custodial or janitorial experience is preferred.
• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATIONS, and OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System.
• Possession of a valid driver's license issued in the state of South Carolina with a safe driving record
