Emergency Department Registered Nurse PRN Position Summary:
The Emergency Department Registered Nurse provides critical care to patients by administering medications, conducting clinical treatments, and monitoring their health status. This position requires collaboration with the healthcare team and the ability to prioritize urgent patient needs while ensuring effective communication with patients and families.
Description:
Registered Nurses in the Emergency Department work on a PRN basis, providing a minimum of 1 shift per pay period, 1 weekend shift per month, and 1 holiday per year based on staffing needs.
- Performing plan of care interventions, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, and other medical care as needed.
- Documenting patient care given.
- Monitoring, recording, and communicating patient condition to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
- Detecting changes in patient status, reporting to the appropriate healthcare team member, and utilizing resources as dictated by the acuity.
- Assigning priorities to patient problems, with highest priority given to those that are most urgent and critical.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting patients with performing activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
- Collaborating across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
- Evaluating learning needs of patients and/or family members and providing patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
- Working as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of patients.

Qualifications:
- Current licensure as a Registered Nurse from the Virginia State Board of Nursing or a Compact State.
- Previous experience in an acute care hospital setting preferred.
- AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- AHA Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and AHA Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications required within one year of employment.
