What are the responsibilities and job description for the Detention Transport Officer position at Southern Ute Indian Tribe?
POSITION SUMMARY: Under general supervision of the Detention Sergeant and Lieutenant, incumbent maintains the safety and welfare of inmates and visitors and monitors all inmate activities within and outside of the detention center. The Transportation/Detention Officer will be responsible for transportation of inmates to and from other facilities, medical appointments, and court appearances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides armed secure transportation of inmates to and from the Sothern Ute Detention Facility.
- Accompanies inmates to all court appearances, and updates files regarding changes in charges, bond, and sentencing.
- Responsible for ensuring inmate care and safety at all times.
- Transports juveniles to youth detention facilities and court appearances.
- Checks persons and property for contraband, which may include drugs, weapons, razors, and nuisance contraband.
- Assists in monitoring, screening, and securing all activities within the detention center from the control room or other assigned Detention Officer posts.
- Supervises all inmate visitations; works from the control room to observe inmate visitations; and retrieves/escorts inmates from holding cells to and from visiting areas.
- Uses Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) to control inmates as needed; must recertify in PPCT annually.
- Logs, sorts, and distributes inmate mail. Mail will be assessed and searched for contraband prior to distribution.
- Schedules and verifies inmate appointments (i.e., medical, dental, and other related appointments) and coordinates associated transportation needs.
- Follows intake procedures and completes all necessary arrest (Booking) paperwork upon intake of outside Tribal Contract Inmates.
- Maintains records on Transport vehicles and schedules preventative maintenance appointments for service.
- Creates efficient and accurate transport documents to include, but not limited to, transportation route maps, inmate medical condition and needs, and complete Criminal histories and risk assessments.
- Must be able to work irregular hours (shift work), holidays, and weekends.
- Attends training as requested.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 21 years of age by the date of hire.
- Must have successfully completed the approved basic police training course conducted at the Indian Police Academy or similar accredited police academy substantially meeting or exceeding the level of training provided by the Indian Police Academy or a respective State POST certification. The certification from such academy or POST must be active and current and must be maintained through the duration of employment.
- Must have been employed as a certified full-time law enforcement officer for at least one year.
- Must obtain and maintain handgun certification throughout employment.
- Must pass a comprehensive Law Enforcement background investigation prior to employment and as a condition of employment.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Police Commission card within 90 days of appointment.
- Must have or be able to obtain knowledge of the Southern Ute Criminal Justice System.
- Must maintain a telephone for emergency notification of emergency transports and other emergency responses that may be required.
- Must never have been convicted of a felony or a crime of misdemeanor domestic violence in Tribal, State or Federal court. Must not have been convicted of or placed on a deferred judgment for any misdemeanor crime for one year prior to appointment.
- Must not have served any State, County, Tribal, or Federal jail or prison time within the last 4 years.
- Must have a valid Driver’s license for state of residency and be insurable under the Tribal vehicle insurance policy.
- Must successfully pass a medical examination prior to appointment and thereafter annually.
- Must successfully pass a timed Physical Agility test during the first 90 days of employment and annually thereafter. The test will consist of a serpentine run, 150 lb. body drag, 3’ barrier vault, bed search, stair climb, 5’ barrier up & over, tunnel crawl and a lift & carry.
- Must pass a psychological evaluation prior to employment.
- Must pass a thorough background check including Criminal History, fingerprint check, and pre-employment drug test.
