What You Will Do

  • This position is to work under administrative direction, to be responsible for the repair and maintenance, inventory control, and/or security of musical instruments and related equipment.

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent

Five (5) years (60 months) of work experience in the maintenance and repair of musical instruments

Substitution: Successful completion of a formal training program in band instrument repair and maintenance, such as a program recognized by the National Association of Professional Band Instrument Repair Technicians (NAPBIRT) or a closely related program that includes training in woodwind and brass instrument repair, may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Formal training, certification, or specialized education in band instrument repair and maintenance.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of a broad range of woodwind and brass instruments, including their mechanical systems, maintenance requirements, and common repair needs.
  • Experience diagnosing and completing routine and advanced repairs, adjustments, cleaning, and preventative maintenance on woodwind and brass instruments.
  • Experience operating and maintaining hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment used in professional instrument repair.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and manual dexterity.
  • Ability to assess instrument playability, response, intonation, and overall condition.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize repair and maintenance needs, maintain appropriate repair records, and manage multiple projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, staff, vendors, and members of the public

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver’s License or state of Illinois ID Card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days is grounds for immediate separation.
