The Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs serves as an academic leader responsible for the operational oversight, quality, and continuous improvement of all undergraduate nursing programs within the School of Nursing. This role focuses on program excellence, student success, accreditation compliance, and alignment with institutional priorities.

The Assistant Dean is a member of the School of Nursing Leadership Team and works collaboratively with the Dean, Associate Dean for Services, Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs, Academic Affairs, Associate Dean of Student Affairs and Student Services, Assistant Dean of Graduate Programs, Department Chairs, and program leadership to advance undergraduate education. This is a 12-month fiscal appointment with optional teaching responsibilities, as determined by the Dean. Undergoes administrative review after the second year and every three years thereafter, incorporating faculty feedback. This position reports to the Dean of the School of Nursing.

Leadership And Administrative Responsibilities

Undergraduate Program Leadership

  • Provides administrative oversight for all undergraduate nursing programs, including Traditional BS, Accelerated BS, and RN-BS programs.
  • In collaboration with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, oversees curriculum development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement across undergraduate programs.
  • Ensures compliance with accreditation standards and leads program reporting processes.
  • Annually updates undergraduate program materials, including student handbooks and university catalog content.
  • Monitors program outcomes (e.g., NCLEX pass rates, retention, progression) and implements data-driven improvement strategies.
  • Oversees implementation of student policies and recommendations from undergraduate committees.
  • Prepares annual undergraduate reports and provides data for accreditation and institutional reporting.
  • Provides performance feedback on Director of Prelicensure Program to Department Chair to include in annual review.
  • In collaboration with Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs, provides supervisory direction to support staff for undergraduate programs.
  • Provides collaborative and visionary leadership that promotes collegiality and relationship building within the School of Nursing and across the university and clinical partner community. Effectively leads groups, facilitates teamwork and decision-making, and fosters a culture of respect, inclusion, accountability, and continuous improvement. Demonstrates strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills, addressing challenges with professionalism, diplomacy, and a solutions-oriented approach while maintaining positive and productive working relationships.

Student Success and Engagement

  • Oversees recruitment, admissions, progression, retention, and graduation processes in collaboration with student services and program staff.
  • Facilitates communication with undergraduate students and addresses program-level concerns.
  • Promotes student engagement through programming and participation in School and University initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the undergraduate Student Success team.ensuring evidence-based practices for student success that support SIUE’s and the SON’s strategic plan for student success. Supervises the undergraduate Student Success Coordinator.
  • Collaborates with and provides requested information for Program Dismissal Appeals Committee (PDAC) on student appeals and sends dismissal letters as needed.

Shared And Collaborative Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean, Assistant Deans, Program Directors, and Department Chairs on curriculum, faculty workload, and student issues.
  • Works with the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and Undergraduate Student Affairs Committee (serving as ex-officio member).
  • In collaboration with chair(s) meets minimally once during Fall and Spring semesters with undergraduate faculty for listening sessions to address programmatic concerns and to foster quality improvement.
  • Collaborates with simulation, clinical, and community partners to support educational quality.
  • Supports grant development and funding opportunities related to undergraduate education.
  • Represents the School of Nursing on University committees related to undergraduate education.
  • Participates in School and University events.
  • Fosters collaboration across departments and programs.
  • Collaborates with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Director of Student Services (DSS), program coordinators and directors, and student advisors regarding recruitment, application, admission, retention, and progression of undergraduate nursing programs to ensure coordinated student support.

Qualifications

  • Earned PhD, DNP, or equivalent doctoral degree (preferably in nursing).
  • Eligible for faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching, particularly in undergraduate nursing education.
  • Experience in academic leadership and administration.
  • Established record of scholarship and service.
  • Licensed or eligible for RN licensure in Illinois and Missouri.
