What You Will Do

  • Employee performs routine and repetitive kitchen tasks such as food preparations prior to cooking or serving raw food; compile and prepare ingredients prior to cooking; sets table, serves food and cleans-up food service equipment and areas.
  • He/She works under direct supervision from a designated supervisor.

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of work experience in food preparation in a commercial setting.
  • As required by the position to be filled, possession of the Illinois Department of Public Health, Food Handler Training Certification (from an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited trainer).

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of food terms, materials, equipment, and methods used to prepare food.

Knowledge of materials and methods used to prepare food on large scale, use and care of relevant utensils and equipment, and food values and nutrition.

Knowledge of weights and measurements (i.e. pound, ounce, cup, gallon).

Ability to pass food handler's examination.

Strong service orientation, actively looking for ways to help people.

Knowledge of sanitary procedures and directives; how to use simple cleaning solutions and equipment.

Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.

Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents.

Detail oriented and thorough in completing work tasks.

Illinois Residency Requirement : Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

Illinois residency requires proof of a valid Illinois Driver’s License or state of Illinois ID Card. Failure to produce the required documentation within 180 calendar days is grounds for immediate separation.

Classification: State Universities Civil Service System Classification Number: 3867 – SUCSS Classification Title. Veterans: Veterans who qualify for preference must provide proof of eligibility within ten (10) working days of submitting an application.
