JOB SUMMARY  

 

Provide comprehensive health care to the student-athlete population within the athletic department during the academic year.

 

 

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS 

 

Reports to: Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Medicine 

 

Supervisory Responsibility: N/A 

Indirect Supervisory Responsibility: NA

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but is not limited to the following: 

 

  • Oversees the medical care for student-athletes under their direct supervision, including consultations with named team physicians.
  • Ensures all student-athletes have completed all pre-participation documents including physical examinations before practice and competition.
  • Onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses to student-athletes including prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation. 
  • Acts as a consultant to the head athletic trainer and head coach of those sports under their supervision regarding the physical well-being of their student-athletes.
  • Monitors the athletic insurance coverage for the student-athletes in those sports under their supervision through the athletic secretary.
  • Assess the risk of injury, perform ergonomic evaluation, self-care implementation, and overall wellness promotion. 
  • Provide accommodation recommendations, related to sports, for student-athletes with restrictions or limitations.
  • Proper application of protective or injury-preventive devices such as tape, bandages, or braces 
  • Assess and report the progress of recovering athletes to coaches and physicians.
  • Collaborate with physicians in order to develop and implement comprehensive rehabilitation programs for athletic injuries.
  • Conduct an initial assessment of an athlete's injury or illness in order to provide emergency or continued care, and to determine whether they should be referred to physicians for definitive diagnosis and treatment.
  • Develop training programs and routines designed to improve athletic performance.
  • Conduct research and provide instruction on subject matter related to athletic training or sports medicine.
  • Evaluate athletes' readiness to play, and provide participation clearances when necessary and warranted.
  • Inspect playing fields in order to locate any items that could injure players.
  • Instruct coaches, athletes, parents, medical personnel, and community members in the care and prevention of athletic injuries.
  • Perform team-support duties such as laundry, maintaining equipment, stocking supplies, and inventory management.
  • Travel (when possible) with athletic teams for away events.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Assistant Athletic Director - Sports Medicine and/or Director of Athletics.

All remaining duties are considered "nonessential" within the context of the ADA, which means that the function could be reassigned to another employee in order to allow a disabled individual to hold the position.  Alternatively, the manager could try to provide a reasonable accommodation so that the disabled individual could perform the function.

Qualifications:

 

EDUCATION   

 

Required Education:

 

Master's in Athletic Training or related field

 

Preferred Education:

 

Master's in Athletic Training/Health Care Administration



 

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

 

Required- National Athletic Trainers Association Board of Certification - Passed Boards  

Florida dept of Health/Florida Board of Athletic Training - Licensure



 

EXPERIENCE 

 

Required:

 

Complete accredited program and passed national board exam. Clinicals/experience is created throughout educational program.  Can work as soon as board is passed and licensure obtained

 

Preferred:

 

1-2 years of certified experience in collegiate athletics 

   

  

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

Required:

 

Basic skills taught in educational program shown competent with passing of board exam and passed competencies within educational program.  

 

 Preferred:

 

Basic computer skills, including word processing, PowerPoint, and Excel, along with strong written and verbal communications skills.  


Advanced soft tissue mobilization skills, IV therapy, CPR Instructor, Manual therapy techniques, dry needling



 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is considered Non-Essential for the purposes of Emergency Response.

 

Physical Requirements: 

 

Work is medium demand. Lifting 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects. 

  • Medium strength is required to position patients for examination.
  • May assist patients as needed, helping them on and off the exam table 
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Yes 15%

 

Schedule:

 

Monday - Friday 9 am - 6 pm, Nights and weekends depending on events scheduled and sport in season.



 

TRAINING

 

All new hires and employees transferring into a new position will have a 90-day probationary period within which to learn the functions of the job and to be evaluated. Following the probationary period, the employee can transition to regular status, have the probationary period extended in order to receive more training, or employment can be terminated. Required compliance training is as follows:

  • Emergency Employees report for or must remain at work in emergency situations.  Dismissal or closure announcements do not apply to this position unless instructed otherwise by your direct supervisor or a member of the Leadership Team.  



 

SCREENING

 

All full-time positions at SEU are deemed security-sensitive and require background checks. Employees required to drive their own personal vehicle, a rental car or an SEU vehicle in performance of their duties must pass an MVR records check and meet the requirements of the University’s insurance carrier in order to meet the requirements of the position.
