Job Overview
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Release of Information Clerk to support healthcare operations by managing requests for medical records and ensuring compliance with privacy and confidentiality regulations. This role requires accuracy, strong organizational skills, and the ability to communicate effectively while handling sensitive patient information. The Release of Information Clerk will review, code, and analyze medical records, process requests, and assist in maintaining proper billing and documentation procedures.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Review, code, and analyze medical records to identify inaccuracies or omissions.
- Plan, organize, and accomplish medical record reviews, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Analyze patient records with multiple injuries, conditions, or procedures; identify omissions or inaccuracies and initiate clarification with staff physicians.
- Perform order and denial management tasks using the Health Information Management (HIM) refusal inbox and standard DoD workflows.
- Forward refusals and denials to the appropriate provider for correction or resolution.
- Initiate and ensure proper billing procedures upon completion of requests; post charges and forward billing statements to the appropriate accounting officer.
- Protect patient confidentiality by treating all patient lists as privileged information and preventing disclosure outside the MTF without proper authorization.
- Communicate effectively with staff, patients, and external agencies as needed.
- Meet productivity standards, including typing a minimum of 1,200 lines per day.
- Perform other duties as outlined in the Release of Information Clerk labor category under the base contract.
Education and Qualifications
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Education: High School Degree General Educational Development (GED) equivalency and medical terminology
- Equivalency determination requests are not permitted for this role.
- Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) required, Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- Licensure and Board Certification: Not required.
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English well enough to communicate effectively.
- Must have basic computer knowledge and the ability to type at least 1,200 lines per day.
