South Mountain Community Health is a long-standing family practice located in Boonsboro, MD. Established in 2004, our mission is to assist patients in meeting their healthcare needs and goals. We are seeking a full time Medical Receptionist to join our primary care team. This role is essential in creating a welcoming, efficient, and patient-centered front office experience. The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced healthcare environment while maintaining a compassionate and professional demeanor.
Responsibilities:
Front Office Operations
- Open and prepare the office each morning, including phone systems and front desk setup
- Greet patients and visitors, ensuring a positive and professional first impression
- Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming front office environment
Patient Registration and Financial Coordination
- Verify and update patient demographics, insurance, and contact information
- Check patients in and out efficiently while maintaining accuracy in the EMR
- Collect copays, deductibles, and outstanding balances
- Provide and review patient forms to ensure completeness
Scheduling and Communication
- Answer phones, schedule appointments, and manage provider calendars
- Ensure patients are up to date with appointments when scheduling or addressing requests
- Communicate effectively with providers and clinical staff through EMR messaging
- Document patient interactions and messages accurately in real time
Insurance and Referrals
- Verify insurance eligibility prior to appointments
- Process referrals and coordinate with specialty providers
- Complete referral documentation and submit required clinical information
Administrative Support
- Manage incoming and outgoing faxes according to office protocols
- Scan and upload documents into the EMR
- Assist with retrieving patient results or coordinating follow-up as requested
End-of-Day Responsibilities
- Reconcile and secure the cash drawer
- Prepare phones for after-hours coverage
- Clean and sanitize front office and patient areas
- Complete daily closing checklist
Team-Based Care
- Work closely with providers and clinical staff to support patient care
- Participate in cross-training and support back-office functions as needed
- Assist with weekly deep cleaning and office organization
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- 2–3 years of experience in a medical receptionist or healthcare front desk role preferred
- Experience in a primary care setting is highly preferred
- Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) systems required
- Experience with Athenahealth (athenaOne) strongly preferred and considered a significant advantage
- Strong organizational and multitasking skills with exceptional attention to detail
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism and discretion
- Knowledge of medical terminology and insurance processes preferred
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changing priorities
- Strong problem-solving skills and sound judgment
